UCLA not being at number 1 makes this list invalid.
Other teams also with short histories, but still ahead of us???
New Orleans
Tulane
South Florida
UAB (at 45?)
UAB maybe (based on a very strong 1980s and their run a few years ago) but the other 3 here, no way! I guarantee (without looking it up) that we have more NCAA appearances and FFs than these----USF has almost nothing other than marginal success in the 1980s.
Why?..Iowa was strong for many years 80-90s I know…
Edit, I just looked at the poll and see how it was done now. Seems to factor in SOS a lot and not NCAA appearances, conference championships, etc…very little merit to it, IMO because of the “power conference” bias.

Maybe UAB never had any really down stretches? Does seem a little high. What were our records like in the eras pre-Rose? That along with the early-mid 80’s may have been enough to drag us down. And our good years were probably not high enough to make up for these really bad stretches.
The A10 comes in ok, almost certainly the best non-big 6 conference (though the Mountain West is up there). Temple 31, Dayton 48, Saint Louis 53, St. Joe’s 56, Xavier 59, Duquesne 67, Lasalle 71, St. Bonnie 96, GW 97, URI 114, Fordham 133, Charlotte 152, Umass 157, Richmond 158.

Bill Foster’s record as HC (1970-75) was 88-38. Not sure why pre-1970 would factor in since we were not NCAA Division I prior to that. Also, school started playing hoops in 1946, so I don’t understand the 49 years listed by ESPN. Also still a junior college in 1960, so record as 4-year school would start in 1965. Hmmm…

Was Foster's record against decent competition? If so, that shoots my early years holding us back theory in the foot. Unless they screwed up and included years before that they shouldn't have.
Georgetown did NOTHING prior to late 70s/early 80s----I don't think.
Apparently your right, but I must admit I wasn’t around then so I was surprised
Bradley must have been strong early on because I can’t recall them being that strong- I was also surprised by Minnesota but they were pretty strong early on it seems
49 years of existence. THIS IS OUR YEAR.
Hooner, ESPN’s math is off. Founded in 1946 = 63 years of existence.
1946-1949: Charlotte Center of the University of North Carolina = 3 years
1949-1965: Charlotte College = 16 years
1965-present: University of North Carolina at Charlotte = 44 years
1970-present: Niners as NCAA Division I men’s basketball program = 39 years
