Anybody go to the first day practice or scrimmage?
Did we see anything interesting?
I made it out for most of the scrimmage. Honestly, I spent most of the time trying to figure out who is who among the new faces. Hopefully I’ll get back out there again soon.
Today Ober and Gonzalez played first. Both look like they could be good options. Tommy Bullock did a nice job at second. He had a couple of nice hits as well.
I think the staff really likes Maciejewski on the mound if he can get some confidence. Also saw Patrick Szczypinski throw a couple innings. He’s got some things to work on as a freshman, but I like his attitude. After an inning-ending K he strutted back to the dugout like he owned the joint.
There’s all kinds of things I’m missing. Like I said, I was trying to figure out who a lot of these guys are.

Looking at the roster, there seem to be a lot of juco transfers.
There are a few holes to fill from last years starting lineup.
Who gets the nod?
Any freshmen stepping up?

Obviously the holes that need to be filled from last year are at LF, RF, 2B, and 1B. Out of those spots, I think the best place that a Freshman would have a shot to earn some PT from Day 1 would be in either LF or 1B. Lots depends on Ober’s health and whether he can play LF, 1B, or DH. He couldn’t throw in the fall, and it sounds like now he is working at 1B this spring. DH will likely be either Smith or Yett, whoever isn’t catching that day.
I think our projected line-up is right handed heavy, so a Lefty bat would be preferred at either 1B or LF or both. Honestly I haven’t seen much of the new guys to say who looks good where.
Other than Zack Smith, most of the guys returning are righties. Reece is a switch hitter. Here are the leftys we have, mostly newcomers:
Todd Elwood Soph
Jesse Gonzales JUCO
Levi McLaughlin JUCO
Eric Lansinger Fresh
Chase Haywood Fresh
I thought I was the only one!! FSU wears what they call their “Sunday Golds.” I think you have to bring a certain swagger if you are going to wear all gold unis.
