2020 College Hoops Coaching Carousel

Then he took the Iowa job and those three seasons were the totally opposite of his tenure at Butler. Perhaps he too can resurrect his career in the Valley a la Greg McDermott, who also made an ill fated move to a Hawkeye State P5 after success at Northern Iowa.

Carousel is cranking up - Rick Ray out at Southeast Missouri State (Ohio Valley) after 5 seasons and Billy Wright gone after 6 at Western Illinois (Summit)

Louis Rowe out at JMU (CAA) after four seasons and Mike Dunlap gone after 6 at Loyola Marymount (West Coast).

Two openings in Mountain West after Air Force fires Dave Pilipovich after 8 seasons and Wyoming let’s go of Allen Edwards after 4.

Carousel still spinning in spite of recent events as Steve Hawkins out at Western Michigan (MAC) after 17 seasons and Dan Majerle gone at Grand Canyon (WAC) after 7.

This is the second year since 2008 that I haven’t wondered if we needed a new coach. (The other was 2013, Major’s 21-12 year.) Feels nice.

The Majerle firing something of a head scratcher as the former Phoenix Suns star was 136-89 in seven seasons at GCU. Includes four 20 win seasons with this year the only losing one (13-17). Had Antelopes in WAC championship game the two previous seasons, which were the first that GCU was eligible following transition from D-II to D-I. 2019-20 roster wracked by academic eligibility issues and team still averaged 6,900+ in 7,000 seat arena this year. Hmm…

Robert Ehsan out at UAB after 4 seasons;

Tim Cluess steps down from Iona (MAAC) after 10 seasons due to health reasons. Six NCAA and 2 NIT appearances during his tenure;

Steve McClain fired after 5 seasons at UIC (Horizon);

UNCW (CAA) will hire NC State assistant Takayo Siddle, who previously served as a Seahawks assistant under Kevin Keatts.

Slick Rick is back!

Iona officially selling its soul to the Devil.

Pitino can now be the second most famous coach at Iona. Jimmy Valvano was #1.

Old joke: State basketball player asks Valvano where he coached before. “Iona College”. Never mind what you own, where did you coach?

Been interesting reading the various takes on Pitino returning to college hoops, especially the ones that ignore his past. Anyway, here are a couple more:

Scott Padgett out at Samford (SoCon) after 6 seasons.

Pitino on the “Repentant Tour” prior to assuming his new duties. Seeing that Iona is located in the current coronavirus hot zone of New Rochelle, may be awhile before he is physically on campus.
