Both D1 Baseball and Baseball America had writers attend our exhibition game on Saturday.

Grande also hit 2 HRs in the Friday scrimmage that I watched. Will be interesting to see if he can hit his way into the lineup. Going to be tough for a freshman to jump into this line-up.

You can start to see the position competitions and depth chart developing.

Should be interesting to watch the 2B/SS positions with Knight, Dragum Furman, and Suarez, with McCabe at 3rd now. Knight was at 2B and Furman at DH for the exhibition game last week.

Butcher is out in RF

Hopson is injured behind the plate so we have 2 true freshman and a juco transfer working there.

Good news that Brooks and Bruce are back. Didn’t know if they would stay around another year or not. Much needed help in the pitching department.

Some pretty lopsided scores in this series, but some good starting pitching performances.

Game 1- Matt Brooks pitched 4+ scoreless innings and Team Brooks won 7-2

Game 2- Will Lancaster pitched 5+ scoreless innings, 2 Hits allowed, and Team Brooks won 11-2

Game 3- Cam Hansen 5 IP, 9 K, 1 ER, Team Brooks won 15-4

Game 4- AJ Wilson pitched 4+, 2 H ,1 ER allowed Team Bruce won 10-1.

Offensively Cam Fisher has 2 Grand Slams and a 3 Run HR in the 4 games.

Team Brooks led offensively by McCabe Cunningham, Dragum, Fisher and Grande.

Team Bruce led offensively by Furman, Knight (HR), Baker (HR), Butcher, Brandon (HR), & Madole.

Thanks for the update Mr. B! Looks like our pitching ship may have been righted (fingers crossed). Good to get Brooks and Bruce back. And looks like our offense won’t be impacted to much from the loss of Groover and Pilolli. I especially hated to see Groover go. Great to have McCabe, Knight, Butcher, Furman and the rest back. From what limited amount of baseball I have seen this fall, Madole from UNCG looks like he will help out our hitting too.

Question. Is Brooks throwing knuckle balls exclusively now?

Brooks is not throwing the knuckle ball exclusively, but he’s throwing it a bunch. Tyndall looked pretty good catching it this week too.

Forgot to mention Giesting too. He had 7 Ks only 2 BB, 2 ER in 4 IP in Saturday’s game for team Bruce.

Not surprisingly, knuckleballers are as uncommon in the college game as they are in the professional one. The difference is that professional players are better innate hitters than their college counterparts. If Matt can throw the pitch consistently enough to produce strikes (and, our catchers can catch it), it could be a real weapon.

In my 20 years of following DI college baseball as closely as I have, I can’t recall one knuckleballer. To say that college batters haven’t faced it…ever…is not a reach.

I will make it a point to come see a knuckleballer pitch a college game. Would be crazy and a blast if he is effective!!
