Amazing to look at the different paths these guys took to getting drafted.
Last year at this time, we had no idea who Wyatt Hudepohl was. He was a middle reliver at Kentucky who went into the portal and we signed him last summer. After the fall, Woodard told us that Wyatt was a big league talent. He was right. Wyatt took advantage of his opportunity here to develop and turned out being our Friday ace, and broke a few school records along the way. This summer, he’s our highest drafted player in this year’s draft.
Cam Fisher went to Ole Miss out of HS. Didn’t play so he went to JUCO at Walter’s State. He did great there and then came to Charlotte. Here he developed into arguably the greatest hitter to put on the uniform in 2 seasons. He broke the season HR record and tied the career record. Worked hard to develop and earned All- American status by 6 publications. Had some opportunities in last year’s draft, but bet on himself, came back and rose his stock to a 4th rounder.
Jake is a local Charlotte native from Ardrey Kell, who decided to stay home and play for his hometown college. Worked hard over his 3 years here and developed into a 5 tool prospect. It’s a shame he broke his foot before the season because I think he would have had a special season. Even with his injury, he worked hard to get back and put up some amazing numbers in the amount of games he played. He earned himself a 5th round spot.
No matter what the path, everything you need is here at Charlotte. If you put in the work, the tools and the coaches are here that can get you to the next level.
As always at draft time, I’m happy for these guys that get to move on and realize their dream, but selfishly sad that we dont get to watch them for one more year in Niner green.
All three of these guys have a legit shot at MLB !
This is exactly where I am. With baseball (more than any other sport), it seems like every year right when players start “hitting their stride”, they’re gone.
To add to that, it amazes me how long and difficult the road is for just one of our guys to get to the Major League level (like most everyone great from most every program)
Players selected after the 10th round can be signed for up to $125,000 without the bonus being applied toward the pool allotment, but anything over $125,000 is part of the pool. The Orioles gave 17th round pick Carter Young a $1.325 million bonus in 2022.
but next year he would pay the “age” price no? He’s already “old” as a 4yr JR the covid leverage is outweighed by age.
They DESTROY the guys next year with zero leverage and offer $1.25 as Free Agent. They’re abused as Free Agent signings… https://www.mlb.com/draft/tracker
