2024-25 49er MBB Game #16 vs FAU 1/8 7PM ESPN+

Its not that complicated. If hill can just hire a proven, winning coach like he did with albin, we can win again. We also need to treat MBB better. Facilities upgrades for example

Why in this world would we give Hill the opportunity to hire another basketball coach? His decision making is horrendous.

Highly likely IMO. Since you cant build a team anymore you have to hope you have enough money to buy decent players relative to your conference and then you have to hope you hit on them and you have to hope they stay healthy. Then you have to hope you have a coach that can pull it all together. And then you have to do that every year - since what happens one year has so little impact to the next.

I love basketball, but between our 2 decades of suck and the current structure it sure looks like to win anything we just need money and luck and thats just to win one year and if the players find a way to win they arent even really Niners anymore. Ive thrown in the towel on basketball and honestly I think at this point we are wasting money on it. I still hope we win, but my expectations couldnt be any lower nor could my emotional and fiscal investment in basketball. Its sad and depressing.

Until the system shifts I don’t see a realistic path for us.

Ive said before. I could handle losing. I could handle being bad. Ive donated and bought tickets since 1995, but this environment has done what losing couldn’t. Pushed me away. Zero hope.

Then how do other mid majors do it?

It’s not easy to not win a conference tourney game since 2016.

With what I said. More money relative to their peers and luck with injuries and hitting on the right players. It is the same things that were always challenges but it got exponentially harder. I didn’t say it was impossible. Just unlikely.

The road to relevance was already difficult for a program like ours, especially one that hasn’t won in 20 years. The way many midmajors were able to win and build programs was continuity and experience and finding overlooked talent. Now that is gone.

Athletic administration needs to take a long look at the hoops program.

The system we run will not work in the current environment. The players were brought here to run it but do not have the level of skill to execute it. Fearne said on post game we are getting good looks but can’t finish. That’s the story of where we are. We need a major change in our own name image and likeness. This program is stale and needs a major overhaul. This is not a gold standard in any way. Hard to fathom good players wanting to play here.

I went and sat throught the game last night with 0 expectations.
We get good penty of good looks on Offense and just don’t connect.
On defense, we are just simply to slow as a team. We can’t guard on the wings and we can’t get a rebound.
We have to play a nearly perfect game just to win with this lineup.

I think Fearne is a good coach but we just don’t have the horses.
I do wonder how we can be so bad for so long. How can we not luck up atleast 1 year and make a run in the Conf tourny and make the NCAAs??

I would have never believed we would be this bad for this long…

It’s my fault. I cursed the team after the 2nd half meltdown against NCSU in the 2005 tournament. We haven’t been good since.

Absolutely agree. Our players are too slow and lack the strength to guard anyone on the other team. I know Fearne is trying to keep it positive but FAU could score at will by posting any one of our players especially Reiber, Graves, and Braswell. Last year DJ and Millicic closed off the middle we don’t anything close to them this year.

You can’t teach someone to shoot a basketball and don’t listen to anyone that tells you differently. Sure you can improve FTs through shear repetition but you can’t teach being able to come off screens and nail 3’s. Im sure some will disagree with this, but most know it. Defense and rebounding are about effort, but all the heart and grit in the world can’t overcome a big talent disparity.

Im afraid we have a group that tries hard but has a tough time scoring the ball and that’s gonna equal a lot of L’s.

I’m afraid you are dead on here hootie.

If any of our players read this- I don’t hate or dislike any of them. I’m just not seeing a path to winning with what we are currently putting on the floor. Breaks this fan’s heart.

It appears the players and coaches know the shortcomings. Graves looks like he’s frustrated with how things are going.

I knew it was you all along!

Are other mid-majors capable of being successful for a year or two and keep it sustainable? FAU wasn’t able to and they made it to the FF

Gonzaga about it. This year’s NCAAT will have likely have only one MM at-large and that’s the Zags’ current conference mate Saint Mary’s.

I’m a Fearne stan because I think he understands the game of basketball well and coaches it well. If we are truly an academic institution, I believe he teaches players what to do well. All the talent in the world won’t bring success if the coaching isn’t any good (Poggi).

Like somebody on this thread said, with success comes losing all of our players. So even if we have a flash in the pan season, then what’s it worth? I’d rather have a coach is that committed to success, to the area, and is a great mind in basketball. That is Fearne. I want coaches to come into Charlotte for the next 10 years and know they are going to have to game plan around some physical and aggressive defense, not around some name that will be here for one year.

I like his personality, I like his scheme, I like his pressers, I like him a lot. It’s like a Ted Lasso moment in MBB now, you can’t be so concerned about wins and losses anymore.

To add to this, do we not all agree that Fearne got the absolute most out of every kid that hit the court last year? If so, then that’s all that matters.
