2024-25 Niners Basketball šŸ€

I dunno about D3 but we do need a new D1 level away from those top 30 brands.

Honestly I’m not even sure that fixes it. To really settle things down the portal has to find some structure in addition to regulating the pay. That’s the only way back to some sort of competitive balance. The top brands aren’t going to do they though so the only way is a hard separation.

Whatever the step down division is…I am all for it.

I don’t care if it’s called D2, D3, 1AA…whatever. Just traditional scholarship college sports…no transfer portal and no NIL…just kids going to college that also represent the school playing sports.

I’m with you totally! But does that universe even exist?

Not yet. What is happening isn’t sustainable for 100ish schools. Stands to reason it will at some point.

I’m with you guys. A new D2.

But. Can we survive financially?

No more NCAAT credits.

Not more buy games.

It feels like we can survive. Especially us with a low debt load.

But it’s worrisome.

Just my 2 cents, but the so-called Super League of 30+ institutions just needs to pack up and go do their own thing. Leave the NCAA to the 1,000+ remaining schools spread out over the 3 current divisions.

Or maybe we are Mayberry and just don’t want to admit it.

If you mean Mayberry by choice and or attitude, I’m not buying it.

If you mean Mayberry because we aren’t rich, I get it. But what can we do about that and what can the AD do about that?

Without super donors or a Time Machine it’s not going to change.

Judy didn’t even try with big donors. Mike has a seat at the table and hasnt closed.

End result is the same - no significant increase revenue, continued reliance on students and increasing tickets and donor levels for the people who have been supporting the program. Add into that the competing priorities of NIL funding and capital giving. Its a pretty bleak financial picture - all while money is more important than ever.

See, that’s exactly the thing. Once you realize you’re just being played and it’s not true love it’s very freeing.

When you know where you actually stand and just start sport screwing the chick that’s basically using you, you can have an absolute blast (so to speak) and have a free mind. That’s exactly where I am with niner sports. I’ll enjoy the tailgates, pregaming for any hoops or baseball games I attend, gambling, etc without suffering over the losses anymore.

Yep I’m at the point where I’m so sick of everything going on in college sports where I just enjoy our games and try not to think about anything else. We’re going to get screwed by the P2 but so will almost everyone else. Just enjoy the social aspects of following our teams. They can take away almost everything but they can’t take our love for the school and the community

Honestly now I dont really care about the revenue sports winning or losing anymore - I am neutral. I am still emotionally invested in other sports. If it wasn’t for the tailgate not sure Id even still have my football tickets.

I care about the school more than ever though. Will have to consider moving a chunk of my athletic giving to the pantry and academic side where students still value what is being given to them.

Back on topic - will be interesting to see what Fearne can do. He probably has a better resume to handle the coaching side of this. Not sure his ability to recruit really matters now that its just about cash.

Yeah it probably comes down to how well you can coach up the talent you can get on your budget.

I’ve kinda checked out on it but it is frustrating that other schools at our level seem to do ok while we continue to flop around like a fish out of water

They have been able to do ok and I would echo that. We have hired poorly and extended more poorly. We don’t really know what G5 level sports look like in this new era going forward though. It used to be the equalizer was getting a more experienced tighter team but less talented roster. That is going to be exceedingly hard to do. Seems it will be very difficult to build a multi year program of success with the rules or lack of rules that are now in place. I guess you just have to get lucky with talent and catch lightening in a bottle and hope to ride that to more cash to buy equal level players. Not sure we have a fanbase that cares enough to give more and most of our fans are tapped out or are like me backing away from it all together. Can’t win and slowly build back as the roster will get destroyed as we saw this offseason.

ā€œJudy didn’t try with big donorsā€ā€¦fake news man. Simply not true.

Let me rephrase that. She had her big donors that she was in with but she did not engage the Charlotte community. Hell she told me once that they preferred to focus on areas outside of the city where she could find support. She did not make or have the contacts Mike has.
