2024 49er Football Transfer Portal

clt says dont forget $$$$

$$$ is always a factor, and was the first one I mentioned. It’s not always immediate $$$, though. Many players have a goal of making it to the NFL. Let’s say that a player transfers for a good amount of NIL, but realizes when he arrives at the new school, that he was brought in to be a backup. Being a backup in a player’s final season would be the kiss of death as far as making the NFL, and that NIL would be the last money he makes as a player, so he might transfer again.

The comment is a general one, and not specifically about any person. I’m just saying that there are a lot of reasons a person might choose to transfer, and transfer again; immediate NIL $$$ is only one of the possibilities.

Hunter hinted at us needing to recruit DTs on the HWY 49 podcast, so should have seen this coming. This still sucks.

He also said that he thinks as many as 28 guys on the roster as of that recording were not going to be on the roster come August. He expects a bunch more to leave and Albin will have to replace them all.

So expect a lot more entries on this thread.

The spring game has morphed into a early tryout session. Then like 5 card draw, you swap a bunch of cards for August. It’s totally different these days.

Our biggest needs are going to be DT and WR, followed by OL. I think Hunter is optimistic about some of the names we have heard for the LB position possibly committing to firm that group up.

28 more? I sure hope that’s way off, or at least that it’s mostly players who thought they would start, but now think they may be backups. The good news, I guess, is that, with all teams having to cut ~20 players, there will be plenty of players to choose from in the portal.

I know that we have to accept the portal, because that’s the way it is. Usually I just wish the departing players success in their future endeavors. Yet, I have to admit that I’ll take some pleasure at the fact that the portal works in two ways. The first way is to get players onto new teams, where they hopefully will be happier. The second way it to get some players out of the sport entirely. Many players who enter the portal this spring will not find new homes, and I have to admit that my sympathy will be lacking.

Some kid accepts a scholarship from any school, goes into the portal and not picked up by any school, there is no way I am going to feel sorry for him/her.

When are we going to start seeing definitive portal horror stories I think that would be really interesting

What’s the German word for it? Scheranfreunde. Maybe not that, but similar. ā€œTaking pleasure in the misfortune of another.ā€ Somebody he’p me here!

Do we think all 3 of our QBs stick around?

You are correct.

So far as I can tell, 39 Charlotte players entered the portal in December. Fifteen of them were able to move to P4, while nine moved sideways to another G5 school, and five moved down to FCS. The other ten, if they have a new position, I haven’t been able to find it:
Jack Reynolds
Terez Traynor
Andre Washington
Shadrick Byrd
Chavon McEachern
Tyson Clawson
Darious Wallace
Avery Morris
Elijah Culp
Alonzo Colvin

Some of these, I may have missed. Others may find positions in this last portal window, while a few may join the ā€œreal worldā€ sooner than they expected.

It’s not a question of taking pleasure in the misfortune of another. It’s simply watching the free market at work. In a free market, people are entitled to take risks. Some will benefit, some will not. If everyone benefited, everyone would do it. It is only when there are risks of bad outcomes, that there are limits on participation. I have no doubt that many people will benefit from entering the portal, nor that some people will end up worse off. That’s just how it works.

I don’t disagree with the free market scenario, but even free markets have a degree of regulation and at the moment, with unlimited transfers and zero controls over NIL, it’s more like the Robber Baron days in college sports…it’s killing my interest and enthusiasm. I’ll be there on Saturdays in the Fall…but asking me to care as I once did…those days are gone. Greed and monopolistic power has ruined the game for me on so many levels.

I want the horror stories to come out to dissuade players from jumping into the portal so quickly.

Anything to give pause to players and hopefully make them realize if they stick it out and dedicate themselves to their craft then they may be better off.

I agree with you, Greed, but on which side? I realize I am in the minority that doesn’t completely side with the players. I understand them currently jobbing the system because (the kids and their parents) know it will not be this way much longer. Get what you can, while you can, ie Nikko. IMO, I think these players should benefit some from the marketing of their NIL, but not to the tune of millions. It is taking away from the growth and expansion of the university as well as the non revenue sports. I guess once we stop getting gold medals in swimming, volleyball, track, and softball etc.. in the Olympics, because those programs were shut down, maybe they will care then. That’s why Pro’s are in the Olympics now. Ego

The problem is our kids are usually not horror stories. They will usually get a shot at fcs or d2 because of the previous arrangement here. But I promise you, the FCS and D2 horror stories are real. The kids are just not high profile enough that the stories get told.

Every body thinks they are going to ā€œmake itā€ until they don’t.

I’ll always enjoy college football, but this whole process has really taken a lot of the fun away.

I’ll always want Charlotte to win, but this is really goofy pulling for kids that go to 5 schools in 5 years.
