2024 49ers Softball 🥎

A good mix to measure our strength and also some games to just tinker with the lineups. I’ll be interested to see if Duke is on the regular season schedule.

Lost to Duke on Saturday 13-2 over a 10 inning exhibition.

@49erAlumnus can provide more details but here is how we lined up defensively:

C- Winters
1B - Rodi
2B - Hoffler
3B- Chancey
SS- Nyguyen
LF- Mitchell
CF- Wellen (Florida Transfer)
RF- Knight (BC Transfer)

4 returning full time starters, 2 with several starts last season, and 2 transfers.

Obviously, that’s not a great score. It is a Fall exhibition though. We beat Duke in Durham last Fall and that didn’t make a bit of difference when they ended our season in May.

They’ve got to replace the best player in program history (Boo) and the player that was dead-to-rights the conference player of the (Krupit), plus key leaders like Devereaux. This is where those last several recruiting classes will come in handy. Overall, it’s a good mix of youth and experience. Hoffler, Washington, and Chancey are all solid veterans that should provide leadership.

The big thing to figure out is the pitching rotation. Gress is still the workhorse and Elkins should progress and see more innings this year. Then it becomes a question of who can produce behind those two.

I went out to see some of the exhibition vs UGa on Sunday. Standing room only at the Sue for a fall exhibition.

The offense really struggled to get going until late in the game. We ended up tightening things up at 9-7 before losing 13-7 in 10 innings. Chancey and Rodi both homered.

Here’s the lineup we started out with.

  1. Ritchie SS
  2. Knight LF
  3. Washington DP
  4. Rodi 1B
  5. Hoffler 2B
  6. Chancey 3B
  7. Winters C
  8. Dirks RF
  9. Williams CF

Barefoot P

I was a little surprised to see freshman Teagan Richie starting at SS.

State is year one of a new regime and it shows. If the Gals played State in the regular season, the pack would get run-ruled.

This team will be fun to watch in the Spring. A lot of young talent. Freshman Teagan Ritchie looks to a threat to play her way into the lineup on the infield. BC transfer Abigail Knight looks like she’s going to provide some pop. Speaking of pop, during the green\white game on Saturday Kiyah Garrett hit a ball that cleared the video board and landed on the other side of the access road that goes to the tennis lot. Moonshot. If the pitching staff can prove itself beyond Gress and Elkins, they’ll be in very good shape.

Dannngggg-----that is a long shot with a softball.

That’s not hyperbole either. I picked the ball up and gave it to her family.
