They shot 33% from the line. If Shaw hit 75% of their free throws they win.
We beat a D2 team by 4 with this expensive roster.
If itās any consolation, our great 91-92 NCAA tournament team with Henry Williams almost lost to Division 2 Johnson C. Smith that season. I believe we were ranked at the time.
Itās one thing to have a game like this, but thatās 3 poorly played games in a row. We appear to be regressing since game 1
Another consolation is that Boise State did lose their opener to D2 Hawaii Pacific.
Like us, ECU also had a close call with a CIAA squad when the Pirates were one point better than Elizabeth City State on Nov 13.
Anyway, 160 year old Shaw U historically doesnāt schedule D1 exhibitions - a game vs Elon in 2021 that was canceled is all I could find - so not sure why the Niners in 2025.
Just now checked espn for the first time today and realized we had a game. Saw the score. Was a bit surprised. Glad I didnāt invest time into it (I like going to Niner games with my son though).
Yeah, itās time to clean house. I want more for my Alma mater.
After the App game someone posted they thought we are playing too many players. They may have a point. After several easy Shaw baskets we had players pointing to each other and spots on the floor like they were blaming each other. They are definitely not in sync with each other. Also, we do not appear to be a good 3pt shooting team and to me it seems like our offense revolves around getting an open 3.
Another thing we were toldā¦. We had recruited some really good shooters.
It may of just been Shaws defenseš
Some games we hit a bunch of 3s, some games we donāt. Its all mental
Got me to thinking, so hereās a break down of overall shots attempted vs how many are 3s.
Team: FGA / 3FGA (% of overall shots)
Indiana St: 65 / 21 (32%)
Tenn Tech: 47 / 21 (43%)
Davidson: 57 / 21 (37%)
VA Tech: 63 / 23 (37%)
App St: 58 / 25 (43%)
Shaw: 57 / 24 (42%)
Does seem like weāre looking to shoot 20-25 3s per game.
Somehow the marked attendance was 2,215
I get that with more reps they will continue to get better at the 3, but theyāre just not landing. Especially when considering we dominate the boards, we should play the interior more
Seems odd to say that we have a good big man and weak guards.
Our perimeter defense is soft.
Without Bonke we lose to D2 Shaw today. Give them credit, they were hitting some 3s. Getting hot from the 3 is a great equalizer.
Weāll see what the new AD does. Donāt f- up this hire Chancellor Gaber. Fearne blew his chance when he pissed down his leg against a team that was shaving points in Temple. I know itās a different ball game these days but gotta see results. I canāt point my finger to one positive thing taking place here at the moment. Maybe Fearne has this team make a run in conference. The only way Iām on board with him is if he makes the NCAA Tournament. Thatās the only way to inspire any confidence in this thing.
There was one large group that filled up one section. They all left after half. I believe they were guest of a large local dance school that performed at half time.
Also, Iād like to know where we would rank in 3pt field goal % defense over the last 15 years. It may be too difficult to find or figure out, but we have to be in the bottom 10 of all NCAA if not last.
For 30 min Shaw played with more intensity. Something clicked with about 10 min to go and we picked up the pace and defensive pressure. Pushed the lead out to 9 with 2 1/2 min to go, next 3 trips down the floor yielded no points or free throws. They scored on all 3 possessions to make it close again.
The first 10 min of the Davidson game we had no intensity. Fell behind and picked it up and made a game of it. Would love to see us play hard, like we want it, for 40 min.
Consistent intensity is something we have lacked for the entire Sanchez/Fearne period. It looks like we arenāt motivated for long stretches during games. Not sure how thatās carried over. Maybe the style of play just leads to players losing focus or interest.
I was traveling again today.
Caught the last 5 minutes of the game.
If we had lost this game, I would have come back to town and fired Fearne myself. Ridiculous.
