I donāt know why our massive reorg is going to favor us over any team except maybe Monmouth. Albin went what, 3-9 his first season as the head coach?
Between that and my well earned beaten dog syndrome as a Niner fan, I am tempering my expectations.
In addition to Young and Laskey, a spreadsheet someone posted also showed Beams, McGee, Adair, Jeffares, and Kennon. Idk if that is correct, nor who is good and who is not.
I would guess it will take awhile to build credibility with the high schools. The coaches donāt know them. The players donāt know them. One contact wonāt do it. They need to keep it up, month after month, year after year. Also, they need to host clinics for the coaches and/or camps for the local players. But, in a year or two, they will have a lot of credibility with both.
Thatās generally the issue in any market, but letās just say that there is a history hereā¦ Politics if you will.
Each of our previous coaches have come in talking big about how hard they were going to recruit the greater Charlotte area. Itās a very deep vein of talent to mine. Poggi was not different, preaching about how he was going to ābuild a ring fenceā around the city.
Of course the truth is that every SEC and ACC program, as well as several others, considers this their territory. And the politics have been difficult. HS coaches in the area have at times had one idea of what our program should be for their players (āsafety schoolā would be a cynical but not inaccurate take), whereas the staff has not agreed (āwe arenāt here for your 1 and low 2 stars, we want dogsā). In the past it has led to some apparent bad blood / hurt feelings, and more than once resulted in ties being cut. Thatās not to say thatās every case - we have had some good relationships leading to dozens of local kids, fairly highly ranked players, coming here and succeeding, but it hasnāt always been great with every one of the local high school coaches.
I will say this, the Charlotte coach that can successfully build the relationships and trust with all the area coaches, has a chance to tap a gold mine of talent and really build something here. You could probably build an AAC championship caliber program over the course of 3-4 years just recruiting Charlotte HS players. The talent is here, it just goes elsewhere far too often.
