clt says the portal is the way to go now

Not sure why none of the 22 known recruits hasn’t picked us. Some are understandable, like the ones who are headed to the ACC. Definitely need a mix of HS and portal players, especially with the pandemic 5th year expiring.

Its extremely early, and i imagine we will mostly be after portal guys

Actually quite a number of commitments have already been made to schools many would consider beneath us - some way beneath us (like Charleston Southern!). I know the AAC isn’t exactly a notable non-P5 anymore, but irritating seeing our conference mates getting it done - especially Temple!

Anyway, glad to see that Deeng is making a visit. Hopefully we’ll make a better impression on him than we with others who have already been on campus and decided to go elsewhere.

Yeah but do you want to lad a kid who ends up at charleston southern?

Need to clarify that. We haven’t “lost” any recruits to Charleston Southern (while CoC is a different story). Just that watching CSU land a couple of hoopsters this week while we have none is a head scratcher, IMHO.

As our AD has said a couple times now, times have really changed since Lutz was here…… well they certainly have with our recruiting….

Never quite understand what he means when he says that, but is this what he means??

Fearne is not high on incoming freshman and he wants older portal guys since freshman will transfer after first yr

That’s been my read @woodniner but I wasn’t sure.

It’s very different these days.

I talked to Fearne at a football game and he told me we are recruiting incoming freshman for when the transfer from first school

Went back to look at my notes and in addition to the 22 offers we’ve made, another 14 players have been contacted by us but no offer as of yet (and in cases, there won’t be one). So 36 who have been on our radar and would think there are a number of others that I don’t know about in the latter category.

Reiber is the only one I can think of right off the top of my head that we recruited in high school and later transferred to the Niners after first playing elsewhere.

Portal really just started 2 yrs ago, and this is Fearne’s first recruiting yr

Fearne has been here for 6 years, so not getting a break from me - and I’m a fan of his! And while the so-called portal is relatively new, we have taken transfers for as long as I can remember (and lost players as well). No break there either.

Niners contacted but no offer. Picks HU over Air Force, Denver, and Navy.

In all honesty…in this environment…no way in hell I’d recruit a HS kid. If they are any good at all…they are gone…and you will still miss on some of them too.

Do like we’ve done the last 2yrs. Take portal guys you know can play D1 basketball.

Tell the HS kids when they get tired of Utah…come home as a transfer.

Just now seeing this. Offered in July:
