49er Anglers

Anyone else on here into fishing? I figured I’d get a thread started to share tips, stories, ask questions, etc about fishing.

I’ve really gotten into surf fishing since I moved out here to New Bern. Anipalcraig and I go about every other week or so and fish the surf down at Atlantic Beach. I do a little freshwater fishing as well, but saltwater is where it’s at.

My most recent catch was a 10" or so croaker. We fried him in the pan and made some fish tacos, along with a flounder that a buddy of mine caught. Delicious.

Is Croaker any good? I fish right there by Masonboro Island ICW and I catch a lot of them but I never thought to use them for anything other than throw bait

Hell yeah man croaker is good eating!

I’m thinking that for Christmas this year I may ask for a nice fishing kayak with all the bells and whistles. Kayak fishing has gotten pretty popular in the last few years. Here are some pretty incredible pics of some monsters that were reeled in via kayak (not the salmon sharks!): http://www.kayakfishingmagazine.net/records/kayak-fishing-notable-species-catches.html

I got a few fishing yaks myself. love em!

I’d venture to say that Lefty is the expert fisherman of NNN. We’ve had quite a few fishing adventures over the years. Welcome to the club! Great hobby to pick up.

As far as tips:

  • Don’t try to go against the fins when handling the fish.
  • Always have a Rooster Tail in the tackle box.
  • Always have cold beer in the cooler.

The golden rule of fishing. I never break it!

What models do you have? I’m looking at the Ascend FS12T (sit-on-top version) that Bass Pro Shops sells. Just $500 but it looks very similar to models that are around a grand or more.

Come on now Chisox. You’re bragging about a ten inch Croaker?!?!? Thought you had some picture of a 50 pound Drum. :o ;D

I don’t get down to the beach enough to fish much saltwater. I fish mainly Lake Norman and the mountains. I used to live at Vineyard PT on Lake Norman in my single days. Could almost fish right off my balcony. Caught hundreds of bass…largemouth and striper and the beer was plentiful and CONVENIENT. I think the best all around bait is the Roadrunner. Can catch bass pretty regularly on it.

Like the fly-fishing in the mountains in Ashe county…and up at Whitetop Laurel in VA. Catch and release. Fished Montana/Yellowstone one time. Wish I had more time.

I go out to Sunset beach every summer. Got any pointers for some quality saltwater fishing?

My favorite way to fish the surf is just to stick the rod in the holder and chill out with a cooler of beer, with either live minnows or cut up shrimp as bait on a metal double bottom rig, with a 4oz weight. I’ve had to most luck with live minnows.

If you want to cast and reel, stick a Gulp saltwater shrimp on a 1/4 oz jig head, and reel it back in slowly but with lots of quick little jerks. The fish LOVE those things.

Good luck!

Yea I get down to Ocean Isle a few times during the summer, and I post up around 5:30/6 on the surf in the evening with a cooler of beer and go until I run out of bait or beer, or it gets too dark and all I’m catching is sharks. I’ve found minnows to be better largely b/c it’s harder for them to yank them off your hook. Shrimp get soft after a bit and crabs love to come and pluck them off as well. I’ve heard whitefish make runs starting late Sept. into October down there, but I’ve yet to get down there for that. I usually catch croaker, whitefish, and sharks. I don’t fry them up, it’s mostly just for fun, and when I was a teenager catching sharks was always a good way to get attention from girls, just saying.

I freshwater fish on occassion, mostly go with a carolina rig and a plastic worm at the lake where I live. Have pretty good luck with that and catching largemouth bass.

I’m far from being an expert, but I’ve been surf fishing the Outer Banks since I was old enough to reel one in. I’ve got a group of guys that fishes for a week every November down at Cape Lookout. It looks like afew of us will be heading down to Harker’s in a few week’s to fish the back side of Lookout. I’ve been fortunate enough to catchsome nice red and black drum over the years, but I haven’t hooked into a citation red. Yet. Guess I’ll just have to keep trying.

I’m glad to have a steady fishing buddy.

Every time is an experience. I see something new almost every time.

Last time I accidentally caught a bird in my thrownet. :frowning:

I have been visiting the Carolina beaches for almost 40 years and on virtually every trip, have seen surf fisherman but I swear I have never once seen one catch a single thing. It intrigues me but it seems like it’s about 90% sitting/drinking (sounds highly appealing to me right now) and 10% reeling/casting. Maybe I just haven’t camped out long enough by a surf fisher to see if they catch anything. I have mostly done pier fishing at the beaches which is okay if you can find some off the lesser populated piers.

Does anyone know of any good public fishing spots in/around Charlotte? My daughter just turned 2 and I got her first fishing rod in hopes of taking her soon. I grew up in a small town in the south where you knew or were related to about 20 people with ponds on their land who never cared about me fishing there but I am not aware of anything like that around Mecklenburg County. I am also open to public fishing on Lake Wylie if anyone knows of a good spot. I am mostly looking for a family friendly place to just kick back with my daugther and catch some crappie/bream or small catfish. So not really into standing on/under an overpass.

May take her to Dan Nicholas Park this weekend but hoping to find something closer to south Charlotte. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you’ve been watching me and anipalcraig! :))

Actually craig has had some impressive catches in the past. I rarely catch anyhting that isn’t a throw-back.

My biggest gripe about living in Charlotte.

Good luck!
