AD Search + desired changes and direction for Athletic Dept

As it exists, the Gold Mine’s purpose is to funnel as many students as possible into games. It is housed under the marketing umbrella. There’s really no bridge in place between what they do and the 49er Club.

Phil Dubois was very much against guaranteeing students tickets through a booster club. This may be a remnant of that. Even so, I would think a student booster club is a good idea. We have been so bad it’s hard to imagine but there will come a time and a place where we don’t have enough student tickets. I know it’s happened a few times before. Campbell and App State for sure. I’m sure there’s been others.

Been racking my brain trying to remember the AD between Lee Rose and Jeff Mullins and it finally came to me - good ol’ Clyde Walker! Prior to UNC Charlotte he was AD at Kansas (actually recommended by Dean Smith) and an asst AD at UNC-CH, where he was also an asst football coach. Tar Heel grad too.

Worst AD we ever had, IMO. His obit says he retired from UNCC in 1987 but he was in fact fired in 1985 when Hal Wissel - one could argue the worst Niner hire ever - was also pink slipped.

Anyway, definitely don’t want a Walker 2.0!

I don’t give two shits how the Department is organized, so long as we’re reaching bowl eligibility and NCAA tournaments every few years. Relevance is an acceptable improvement over what we have now.

It’s gonna be awhile before new AD is in.

Is there someone in the works or just gonna be a while before they get through the interview/hiring process?

The entire process - gonna be awhile. Into 2026

Do you know if they will be using a search firm?

I would like them to do whatever it takes to raid a program like JMU. In other words, don’t just hire a new AD, hire a new AD and important people in his proven winning program. It’s a financial investment if they win.

Ok, Ok, Ok, now it makes sense. Clayton, every time Biff is mentioned in a post you go nutz, just spewing Hate and it just go on and on. I always said to myself, what in Gods name did Biff do this guy that every time it would generate such a visceral reaction? I would think to myself, did Biff hit on this guys wife? did he not show up at his tailgate? Now it makes sense

Not bringing in someone to help raise Albin and co funds for this pivotal transfer class would be the final nail in the coffin for this department. Shut it all down if it takes 6 months to find someone new

No idea.

FWIW, I’ve read an AD search typically takes 3-6 months.

Holidays complicating things?

Even without a perm AD the fundraising team will still be working on that.

Judy announced her retirement on Jan 4th and Hill was announced as the new AD on Feb 28th. So that was only around 2 months but in hindsight maybe we should have taken 3-6 months.

Interim could start clearing house so new person can come in and immediately start filling roles? No inside knowledge there just a thought.

I think you’re looking at this too deeply. He called you a moron too

This is a crazy idea but does anyone know Jeffery Wilson, formerly of Kings Mountain? Granted, this happened over 16 years ago, but you’d think that he’d have been a very logical donor for ohhhhhh…… I don’t know………stadium naming rights. Wonder what he is up to these days?

NC lotto winner still plans to attend grad school

We need someone who can sell the vision of the University and raise money. Need to increase engagement with Alumni to drive more donors, more participation, more connectivity etc. Need someone who knows how to hire coaches and manage operations. We need a proven winner.
