Akron Athletics

We try this scare tactic of football will double our athletic budget. I am glad we are looking at the numbers conservatively, but I think we are going a little overboard:

Lets see:
Students
Akron: 23K
Charlotte: 22K

Student General Fees (some of which is used for athletics):
Akron: $360
Charlotte: $722

Tuition Total:
Akron: $4200
Charlotte: $2076

Teams Akron fields, that Charlotte Does not:
Football
Women’s Golf
Rifle (men and women)
Swimming and Diving (women only)

Teams Charlotte fields, that Akron Does not:
Men’s Tennis

Now here is the killer…
Athletic Budgets:
Akron: $10,375,010
Charlotte: $8,479,846
(from mid-majority, akron/unc chalrotte’s websites, wikipedia for enrollment only)

I am not at all saying I want akron’s basketball, baseball, golf, etc. I am just saying that maybe the plan can change a little.

Where did your numbers come from?

Both the Indy Star site and the govt site-see link-have them pegged at over $14.4 million in 05-06

http://ope.ed.gov/athletics/InstDetail.asp?CRITERIA=3

Also, if you look at their coaching staffs – the men’s basketball team has two full time and one part-time assistant coach. Very few D1 schools have a part-time 3rd asst coach.

I don’t know the credability of the site. Maybe I am using Phil Dubois Light Rail study references here, but it seems pretty spot on.
I got this information because I saw where akron was building a new stadium, very nice.

I guess the $14.4 is correct. The link you provided seems more accurate. At the bottom of the midmajority page they have questions/comments. I sent a message to double check his/her information and asked where they got the 10.4 mill #.

Does Charlotte currently have the facilities to field a women’s swim team? I know we have a pool in the Belk gym.

We could get rifle, demon brown could have been a two sport athlete

My understanding is that the pool in Belk is not regulation size. The Meck Aquatic Center downtown is though.

Akron had to do something about their stadium. The Rubber Bowl had to be one of the oldest looking stadiums in I-A.

Their football budget is $4 million, which you could rightly say would translate to $5 million for Charlotte after adding womens’ sports … Putting us right about on par with them around $14 million.

Its also a state school. I wonder why they don’t call themselves OSU-Akron? I bet their law degrees would be worth more if they said OSU-A and they could recruit better professors.

Goodyear sure seems to support them bigtime.

I’m looking on page 8 of the Akron newspaper under “Other Sports” to see if I can get an answer to this.
