I donāt have any personal issues or anything with any media outlet in our region. IE the observer or WFNZ. I take it for what itās worth and stand by my statements.
Itās cool. I would love to see this college thrive since Iām an alumnus. I just believe we need as much help as possible.
Originally posted by Savio@Feb 23 2005, 01:03 PM You guys cannot admit we need Packer, more than he needs us.He has the audience to get fans out to the game to see what we are. Weāre not big enough media outlet, a messageboard and UNC Charlotte Marketing, to get fans out there to the games. Listen to yourselves, harassing everyone that gives a little piece your way and all you can do is bitch a little more.
sorryā¦I had to get that outā¦
I tend to agree. Like him or not, alot of people in the Charlotte area listen to his show. I know we take a beating on the show sometimes but so does every other team. I donāt think we should shut out ANY of our media outlets in our market area. We need as much community support as we can get. Last Wednesday, his whole show was about the 49ers, and it was all caller driven, and mostly positive if you can believe it.
As far as yesterdays show , I heard it when the 49er fan called Packer out. It was funny as hell, because he started getting really defensive and testy, as he tends to do when he knows heās wrong. He blew it way out of proportion. I didnāt hear the 2nd caller call in though. All my non-49er friends that listen agreed with the caller as well.
āNeedā him or not, we donāt āhaveā him. For whatever reason, he hates our programā¦ and I donāt think we can do anything to change his mind. If there is anything positive said on his show about the 49ers, it is from callers, not Packerā¦ and most of our fans refuse to call or even listen to the show.

I have listened to him for a while and I believe he's a passive fan just like the students on campus. He goes with what the people want to hear. Bandwagon or whatever you want to call it...
Youāre getting the wrong idea tooā¦the problem isnāt Packer, the Observer, or the mediaā¦itās right on campusā¦start with that and the problem is solvedā¦
Originally posted by LutzFan@Feb 23 2005, 12:49 PM I think the caller has a point though... he can't really talk bad about other people in the the city for not supporting the team when he probably hasn't been to a game in 5+ years. Yes, I know you think he is "helping us out" but 49er fans know better... I didn't hear it, but he was probably taking a shot at us for not being able to sell out games... I seriously doubt his comments were meant to "help us out." That is definitely the way that it comes across, that he is putting down Charlotte for not being able to sell out when you're a top 25 team. To be fair though, he behaves like that with most of the other teams in the area too. If the Panthers are not drawing well, he'll say he thinks crowd support stinks. But we don't hear how not all of the UNC-CH games are sold out and they're a top 5 team, same can be said about Wake Forest too.
The crap he was saying yesterday about getting paid to go to games made no sense to me. The caller simply asked if he had been to a game this season. His response was that he was not the media department of Charlotte and would he get paid for going???
The biggest problem I have is when a 49er fan brings something up, he considers it as whining. But he doesnāt say that about any other caller for any other school. In fact, he encourages people to call āthe whiner lineā and get it off of their chest. But not the Niner fans. Heāll criticize the fans for not being passionate, yet if a passionate caller calls the show, he calls them a whiner.

Well I haven't listened in over a year, but the last thing I remember him saying before I changed the channel was:
āThe A-10 is complete garbageā¦ Who is going to improve it? Charlotte? Pleaseā¦ā
(talking about the new A-10 alignment)
There were plenty of other cracks on us when I used to listenā¦ thats just the one that stuck in my head. That doesnāt sound like a passive fan to me.

^ That I agree with. Promotion should start on campusā¦ but good local radio/tv/newspaper pub certainly helps too.
Savio, not sure why we need Packer. Our program seems to be doing fine without his support. The attendance issue is way over blown. Iād much rather have 8,000 passionate, loud fans at a game, then a sellout of 9,105 made up of mostly whine & cheesers and ācasualā fans.
That being said, winning brings people out. Not some redundant doofus on AM radio. Lets just keep winning and worry about everything else later.

I agree 98.1% with Savio. Many people on this board bitch and bitch and bitch until finally get a bone thrown their way, and then they bitch about that! Itās ridiculous! Iāve three words for this forum: flies. honey. vinegar.
Whatever personal issues one may have with Packer, heās got a good point:
People in Charlotte who claim to be basketball fans (students/alumni especially) that donāt attend 49ers games do deserve to be called out in embarassing fashion. Nut up and admit it, because no one on this board falls into the category anyway: our casual fan base SUUUUUUUCKS.
If it were anyone else other than Packer saying these things, there would be a much greater ourpouring of agreement from this board (a la Scott Fowler).
and on the note of Observer employees, MP is right, as much as some UNCC zealots might dislike it; itās the Oās business to sell papers by reporting the news. Itās NOT their job to promote us. Itās our terrible sports marketing departmentās job to do that. To paraphrase Metro: weāre a 20,000 student university with a sports program run like a 2,000 student DII private school.
If there were enough people that didnāt buy the paper because of a percieved lack of 49ers coverage, then the O would either enhance coverage or lose market share to another paper. Thatās not happening, so they must be doing something right. I, for one, am grateful that Mr. Persinger visits this board and gives us a perspective we wouldnāt normally have, along with some support, albeit unofficial.
The way many on this board act, youād think UNCC was teaching its students of the benefits of communism and propaganda-based press.
ā¦actually, in retrospect, there was a lot of that in my 4 years there. Hmph.

I donāt know why we should show respect to a guy that shows us so little. Did everyone already forget the week before the Cincinnati game and what a jackass Persinger was being?
Disagreeing is one thing, but not showing respect is anotherā¦ the observer coverage is much better and yet some people want to complainā¦i may not always agree with m. persinger but insulting him is another matterā¦
Originally posted by Mike_Persinger@Feb 23 2005, 11:24 AM I seldom see Packer at anything. Doesn't mean he can't do his job effectively, though. I have to admit I was a bigger sports fan and looked more forward to actually attending events before I got this job, especially if I'm going on a press pass. It's different, because you're there working. Good seats, though. It's interesting how this line of work will do that to you ...
Originally posted by ApexNiner@Feb 23 2005, 11:17 AM Dont get me started on Marty's never ending thoughts on Lutz leaving because of fan support. I don't know why Marty is doing that crap either. He's the founding president of the Delta Sig chapter and a UNCC grad. I don't know where the loyalty went. One fact still remains about him though... he's a tarhole through and through. In high school (he and I go way back) he was fanatical about the heels, and he still is. He was your typical heel fan with all the annoying trimmings that one would expect to come with it. His only excuse is that he had family (sisters I think) go to UNC. He's still a good friend and all but he's killing me on the radio. I'm thinking it's just to stir the pot as was probably dictated to him on the show. I will ask him about it. I had to fight the urge to call the show and tell him to stop calling us the "UNC-Charlotte 49ers". I know he's a NASCAR guru, but come on, Charlotte is his alma mater. I was going to drag up some funny moments from his past to boot to give Penner some good ammo. He's lucky I didn't call. <_< :D
