I heard someone say that AI will be the ultimate victory of capital over labor. I don’t know that I agree with that statement, but it is terrifying.

Collateral damage of the AI boom - PC (and console) component makers are raising prices or in this case exiting the consumer market so they can focus entirely on making hardware for AI systems. It has been a longstanding problem with PCs (nVidia graphics cards are stupid expensive and have been very difficult to get hold of), but lately it is raising the prices on PS5s and XBoxs (and PC memory has gone through the roof)… And with Micron:s exit, prices and availability are going to suffer that much more. Micron is a huge supplier of RAM in the market. Them leaving would be like Toyota (and maybe Honda too) leaving car production, at a minimum.

Ram prices are through the roof. I guess it will get worse now. Damn. I considered building a home rig to run some models locally like the gpt open source model and went to price the 128gb I wanted and decided not to.
I need to animate a cartoon character/avatar that I already have an image of. So I want to upload the image. add text to speech and have the character come alive (move mouth, arms, eyes). I need the videos to be between 20-60 seconds. I could piece 2 videos together if need be.
any ai apps anyone recommends? I’ve been trying to test a lot of apps out using whatever trial period they offer and haven’t found what I’m looking for yet.
I’m not familiar enough with the tools available as far as an end product. A lot of the better done stuff is done using custom workflows. I haven’t tried it in Gemini, but you could try it. No matter what I think you’ll have to do stitching of several videos together as most of these only produce 10 seconds or less of video.
Gemini’s image model nano banana pro is the best I’ve used. With it you just about don’t need photoshop at all and it does great at creation from scratch as well. Just haven’t done too much with their video model. Gemini is the one service I pay for, but they give a ton of free usage too. You get 2 TB of cloud space with the subscription.

I do think the future of PC and laptops is going to be soldered on memory like Apple has been doing. AI inference speeds are so tied to memory speed and the current DIMM setup has its limits that soldered on can get beyond. AMD’s latest and greatest is only with soldered on ram.

When I started looking at building a system with 128gb (2x64)I could pick up the memory for $450-500. I slept on it too long and the prices went bonkers which this post shows. Memory chips are worth more than their weight in gold now.
