The only possible benefit I would see here is if that research somehow led to humans having a longer life span because of being able to improve health/keep people alive…
However, given even that, it would mess with the balance of things. You keep people alive and infants are still being born, and all of the sudden we’re in more trouble anyway.
They would be stupid to think you can completely control any kind of lifeform. If you could do that, you think it’d be simple to tell a stupid scientist “hey, don’t exterminate our race by doing something unnecessary and with completely unknown risks.”

Interesting article. Artificial life is a far cry from artifical intelligence though. It took humans about 4 million years get from that point to what we are now. Computer related artifical intelligence seems like it would be more dangerous because it could evolve more quickly.
