Baseball Upate - 5/17/10

Niners bounce back after a rough trip to X by sweeping St. Loius and claiming at least a share of the regular season title! The boys are now 35-13 overall and 18-6 in the A-10. RPI is back down to 80. Rhody and X are both 3 games back with 3 games to go. If we win any one of next weekend’s three games, we eliminate Rhody from title contention. X would need to sweep St. Joe’s while we are swept by Richmond.

This week’s results:
W -Charlotte 11, St.L 7
W -Charlotte 4, St.L 3
W -Charlotte 5, St.L 0

The standings look like this:
W-L GB
Charlotte - 18-6 -
Rhody, X - 15-9 3
GW, LaSalle, St. Joe’s, Fordham - 13-11 5
St.L, Dayton - 12-12 6
UMASS - 11-13 7
Richmond, Duq. - 9-15 9
Temple - 8-16 10
St. Bona - 7-17 11

The week ahead:
@UNC-CH (32-20, 11-16 ACC rpi 29) Tues @ 6 pm
@Richmond (23-26, 9-15 rpi 222) Thurs @ 3 pm
Fri @ 3 pm
Sat @ 1 pm

I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned this on here before, but I hate the Tar Heels. ::slight_smile: A lot. Despite their stellar rpi, they are still one game out of their conference tournament. They could use another non-cenference win on their resume. Let’s kick them while their down. As for Richmond, wind 2 of 3 and nobody can catch us.

Am I missing something? If we won 1 out of 3 against UR, nobody can catch us, right?

If we lost all three and X won all three, we’d be tied and they have the tie breaker.

Great games this weekend. We had our starting pitchers take no-hitters late into the game on Saturday and Sunday. I’m not going to mention any names, but I heard someone on this board jinxed Saturday’s.

“Hey, you know he’s got a no-hitter going right”…PING, solo shot off the scoreboard.

;D

We’re three up on Rhody and X. If we win one against Richmond, we’re outright champs because we’d be 19-8 and the best anyone else can do is 18-9. But if we get swept by UR and then Rhody and X sweep, we’re in a three-way tie that we’re 3rd in. So we need to win one.

No surprise here - #4 seed in the Columbia regional. SC swept Arkansas this weekend. They are playing well.

Chapel Hill is the 1st team out. So beating their tail tomorrow will all but secure them a spot on the couch for the postseason barring they win their conference tourney, which I’m not even sure they’ll make.

I would love to secure the A-10 title outright and knock the Holes from the post season with a revenge victory at Boshamer. 8)

As far as I know, I’ll be in chapel hill tomorrow wearing green.

All it takes to clinch the regular season title is one win against Richmond OR one loss by X and URI. We need to clinch because both URI and X beat us in the tiebreaker. Technically, we still have not secured a 1st round bye yet.

And if you wake up Wednesday morning and see nothing about the game in the paper, it means we won again.

Yes, thats why I said “if we win 1”.

Have I ever told you that I hate tie breking scenarios almost as much as I hate the Tar Heels? Well, not really, but they do make my head hurt.

What if your hate for tiebreaking scenarios and the Tar Heels was a tie?

We need to get the 1 seed, win the A10 Tourney and get seeded within driving distance, that 5-0 loss to the Holes can’t be my last game of the year!

I hope you Niners win your league. But you aint never beet us Tar Heals in nothing. And you aint gonna beet us this time.

Actually, yes we have beaten “your” tarholes… but NO ONE in Charlotte knows it. Not even most 49er fans and most college baseball fans.

Charlotte finished the season with 29 home wins, tying the school mark with the 1998 season. Charlotte attracted 33,969 fans through the gates of Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium this season, averaging 999 fans per game through the 34 home contests. Both the total and average are program bests.

The senior class finished with 100 home wins over the past four seasons, taking 79.4 percent of home games since 2007. The niners finished off Saint Louis in a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference weekend series, giving the 49ers a 23-3 series mark of three games or longer since the stadium re-opened in March of 2007. By winning all three games, Charlotte clinched at least a share of its third A-10 crown in five years of league membership.

Fact of Life: Unless a story is reported by the Charlotte Observer, it did not happen.

My bad guys: in the original post, I listed the Richmond series as being Friday-Sunday. It’s actually Thursday-Saturday. I have fixed the original post. That means that the guys will be on the field in less than and hour to try and wrap up sole possession of the confernce title!

Looks like the game will be on channelsurfing: http://www.channelsurfing.net/watch-richmond-baseball.html
