Alright, I’ll be new to Charlotte next month. So where’s a good place to get some BBQ?
unfortunately, not nearly as many places as you’ld expect or hope if you want real good bbq you’ll have to travel north on I85 a bit.
The best place near the University (that I’ve found) is R&R BBQ on Hwy. 49 in Harrisburg.
Try Hickory House on Tryon near the U. Old school, no credit cards, no windows, etc. but good pork and beef plates…Its not NC barb, though, its tomato based.
GO TO HERLOCKERS!!! It’s right by campus and they have the best BBQ sauce I’ve ever had.
YankeeNiner. BBQ is one of those words that is used to describe a lot of different foods that have little to do with each other. No doubt you’ve heard the reputation of NC BBQ. There’s a lot of BBQ in North Carolina, but it isn’t all “North Carolina” BBQ in the conventional sense.
I don’t know if you’ve had NC type BBQ before, but some people don’t understand because they are expecting some KRAFT BBQ sauce on it. BBQ sauce that you might find at McDonalds for MCNuggets is totally unrelated to NC BBQ. NC BBQ sauce which accompanies NC BBQ is very liquidy and thin and spicy generally with thicker tomato versions in the western part of the state.
Any sauce with much substance is a deviation from the normal “NC style BBQ”. I ate at Smithfield’s BBq and Chicken in Johnston Co. off I-40 with an acquaintance origniating from New York. They were disappointed that instead of BBQ sauce, there was cole slaw on the sandwich. This is typical NC style, although I find that chain’s(such as Smithfields) have a dryer product that is more vinegar based.
As for the actual meat. All i can say is it’s shredded pork. I can’t put it into words.
My recommendation, Smokey Bones, is not real NC BBQ(you didnt specify NC or not ). It is at University Place near the Hilton. They have Tv’s all over and a speaker at your table adjustable to your tv. I have watched a lot of niner’s games there.
Listen to UNCCTF’s suggestion. R&R is good NC BBQ, with both eastern and western sauces. They usually serve vinegar based cole slaw, though…I’d pass on that.

Spoon’s BBQ on South Blvd is outstanding.
They only take cash
They are only open 4 days a week
They are only open 5hrs a day (11am-4pm)
They make a killing!!!
Bill Spoon’s BBQ is as good as it gets in Charlotte. People like to promote Bubba’s (mostly because of Pac-Man) but I have had Bubba’s on a few occassions and it doesn’t come close to Spoons.

Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll be checking a lot of these places out…
oh, and just because I’m from CT, don’t assume i have no clue what BBQ is. I ain’t THAT dumb lol. I know the difference, in fact I dated a girl who’s father competed in several national BBQ cookoffs, so I’ve eaten my fare share…and up til 8 months ago, it showed lol
If you want real BBQ and the best there is, just hop on 85 and head north for about an hour, arriving in Lexington. Here (because its where I am from) lies numerous mom n pop BBQ joints where you can have the best BBQ you will ever eat.

Well, just making sure, cause a lot of people think NC’s Q reputation just means really good grilled food in general.
I know a teacher from NY said he came to NC and he made “BBQ” for his daughter and her boyfriend one time. The boyfriend was confused cause my teacher made hamburgers and hot dogs…you know- BBQ .HAHAH.
Spoons on south blvd is awesome. Also try Bubbas on I77 towards Huntersville and Hillbillies or Kyles in Gastonia. You wont be disappointed.

There are a ton of people here who don’t know the difference. If I’m makin burgers, I call it “grilling”. Then again, people up here are mortified of BBQ sometimes…don’t wanna “get dirty”…losers
I miss eating at Revel’s
There is also an R & R in K-Town (Kannapolis) and Bridges BBQ in Shelby is pretty good too. My wife and I stopped there for lunch this past Saturday on our way back home from the Smoky Mountains.
Well What some people would call REAL BBQ (That drippy pork stuff) to me is not real BBQ. Real BBQ to me is Ribs, Glazed with Sauce. For that type of BBQ the best Restaurant in Charlotte for it is Smokey Bones as mentioned earlier. They have awesome StL and Midwest style BBQ. For NC BBQ, the Hickory House gets rave reviews. I ate their once, but not for the BBQ. It was still good.
