Benny Moss news

I HATE to admit it, but I left in frustration thinking that game was over. I listened on the radio as I drove home in a huff. I was pleasantly surprised when Benny helped pull off one of the most miraculous comebacks in NINER history. I’m still kicking myself for leaving. :grimacing:

Side note: I think that was at the Tyvola coliseum, not the real original on Independence, now Bojangles.

Pretty sure it was Independence.

Just looked it up. Game vs WKU on Feb 17, 1990 was played at the Coliseum on Tyvola.

Cool, where was Park Center?

CPCC next to Memorial Stadium on Kings Drive. Saw many a concert there while in high school, including Kansas, Boston, Johnny Winter, Blue Oyster Cult, etc, etc. Renamed Grady Cole Center in mid-80s and still in operation via Meck County Parks and Rec.

I remember seeing the Gregg Allman Tour, Little Feat and Pink Floyd among others there. Great music there, but usually SRO on the floor. That’s why I set up top in the balcony. Sorry to go off topic!

Park Center game was in December 67 against Guilford. Played about 6 min in that game where we were blitzed by all American Bob Kaufman. Rumor has it they beat John Rouche SC gamecocks in an exhibition when they were top 10 that year. Kaufman played a number of years in the NBA.

Your chart shows Moss playing in 1990 which if I remember was at the Independence coliseum. I was there so my dementia is setting in or you guys are totally mistaken

Kauffman didn’t just play in the NBA, he played in 3 All Star games. He was the best player on the expansion Buffalo Braves. He was a 6’8” center who could shoot from outside, similar to Dave Cowens. The Braves drafted Bob McAdoo in ‘72 and didn’t need Kauffman anymore.

He injured his hip and his career petered out. He was the GM of the Hawks for a few years.

The Independence Arena was mothballed from ‘88-’93 so it wouldn’t compete against the Tyvola Coliseum. The Arena was reopened in ‘93 to host the Charlotte Checkers. The ice at the Tyvola Coliseum was inadequate for hockey.

I won tickets to a NHL Exhibition that was to be played at the Tyvola building in September ‘91. The game was cancelled at the last minute because the ice was too soft. Wayne Gretzky’s aunt and uncle, who lived in Madison, NC, were going to see him play for the first time as a pro.

(Couldn’t he pay for them to see him in a real game in DC?)

I worked in a concession stand in the Independence Arena in the ‘90s and early ‘00s to help pay for my daughters’ competition dance lessons/fees and we would talk to fans about the history of the place.
