Best Albums of 2008 - Running Thread

It’s okay, I know you just read the first sentance.

So Far:

King’s X - “XV”

Looking Forward to:

Underoath’s new album

It's okay, I know you just read the first sentance.

I had to skim it because any time I read more than three lines in sequence it causes my computer to automatically start an “I don’t read novels!” response.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a good cover.

See:

MxPx’s version of No Action
Get Up Kids’ version of Close to Me and Alec Eiffle (hell any song they cover)
Scared of Chaka’s version of Hand in Hand

I’m actually a big fan of Face to Face’s version of In Between Days, but I like the Cure version better, and I hate the cure. Death Cab for Cutie does a pretty good cover of This Charming Man, it is one of the few DCFC songs I like. Hendrix did some great covers, Hey Joe and All Along the Watchtower. I like Digger’s cover of True Blue and Sonic Youth’s cover of Get Into the Groove.

I could go on all day. Leatherface’s version of Hops and Barley is way better than the original.

Sublimes 54-46 is one of my favorite covers of all time!

back on topic for a sec…My Morning Jackets new one comes out next week I think. Looking forward to that one also!

I’m not hip so I don’t listen to new music. All I’ve been listening to is Elvis Costello and the Police.

roots new album is really good.

“Don’t Stand So Close to Me” is one of those songs that is at its worst in the hands of the band that created it.

There is nothing wrong with a good cover song, but when you base your so-called new sound on it, and brand it as your own, well that’s a bit cheesy.

Case in point - Louisiana is a decent song on that same Walkmen album, but it pales in comparison to Another one Goes By (cover of Mazarin’s original). Louisiana is nowhere near as layered, although the lead singer does lay off the Dylan vocal style a bit, which may be a good thing.

While The Roots new album is pretty good, it is nowhere near as good as most of their other albums.

I really think they lost a lot with the retirement of Hubbard (bass). Plus I don’t like the move to a more synthesized sound for the album.

Add that I hate all the guest appearances. I want to hear Black Thought the entire time with some Malik B and an occassional Dice Raw. Throw in a Mos Def or Talib Kweli and that is good. But having all of these additional guys on the album is annoying.

If you like hip-hop, try out 9th Wonder & Buckshot - The Formula.

I would normally disagree about all the guest appearances, but the thing is each verse by the guests were great, some of the best each of the emcees have ever done, especially Mos Def. I would easily say that it is one of the best albums they have done(Things Fall Apart>Game Theory>Rising Down>Phrenology>Illadelph Halflife>DYWM>Organix). I have The Formula, but haven’t listened to it yet.

Death Cab for Cutie: Narrow Stairs…hands down the best I’ve bought in the last 12 month

What the hell does that mean??

He’s saying that it is better as a cover, but I really disagree.

That is F’ing blasphemy!! People have no clue what an amazing band the Police were. The reason they are covered so much is because they had so many amazing songs. Get a clue Hairy Potter!!

He's saying that it is better as a cover, but I really disagree.

The poppy turn The Police give the chorus just ruins the song for me. It’s better played a little darker and a lot more understated, in my opinion.

I like The Police, but that doesn’t mean that they’re blameless. I happen to prefer covers of that song to the original. It’ll be ok, I promise.

Also, I’m not sure if the “Hairy Potter” thing was a mispelling or an inexplicable jab at my hairstyle, which I didn’t think was unique enough to warrant it.

Seriously, are you 5? Calling him a name, and misspelling it at that…because he doesn’t like a song by a band you apparently have a man-crush on? Shame

LOL… you kids are so sensitive. I was calling you Hairy Potter for your old avatar with the pointed hat. The “Hairy” spelling was just an extremely clever play on words…

I enjoy a good cover as well, but usually because I like the original and enjoy the new twist.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the original too. But I think the lyrics and the pace of the song are mismatched and that it can be (and has been) much better handled.

I still don’t get the hairy part though. I’m not hairy. Oh yeah?! JimmyFLAT49er! SHIMMYhat49er! Jimmyhat4piener!
