Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the original too. But I think the lyrics and the pace of the song are mismatched and that it can be (and has been) much better handled.
I still don’t get the hairy part though. I’m not hairy. Oh yeah?! JimmyFLAT49er! SHIMMYhat49er! Jimmyhat4piener!
That is F'ing blasphemy!! People have no clue what an amazing band the Police were. The reason they are covered so much is because they had so many amazing songs. Get a clue Hairy Potter!!
QFT
I just downloaded a ton of Police on my ipod last month
A little bit of research reveals that pretty much any acoustic version of the song trumps the original, including The Police’s own acoustic version, which I admit to having never heard before. I still don’t like the original direction they took the song though.
My personal favorite is by Seth Boulton, a local artist here in Charlotte I highly encourage you to check out. I doubt that there’s an mp3 of it online anywhere, but you could literally just e-mail him and he’ll send you one if he’s got it on his computer. I won’t put his account on here, but I can PM it to you if you want.
Well in the past few years John Mayer and 30 seconds to Mars have both covered Message in a bottle (Machine Head did as well). Puffy sampled “Every Breath You Take” in his tribute to Notorious BIG.
I would normally disagree about all the guest appearances, but the thing is each verse by the guests were great, some of the best each of the emcees have ever done, especially Mos Def. I would easily say that it is one of the best albums they have done(Things Fall Apart>Game Theory>Rising Down>Phrenology>Illadelph Halflife>DYWM>Organix). I have The Formula, but haven’t listened to it yet.
I guess when I listen to what they are capable of (Things Fall Apart, Game Theory, Illadelphia Halflife / my 3 favorites) I get spoiled. Rising Down has grown on me some, but I can’t get pasted the synthesized sound of the album. Game Theory was similar in message but had a more live band sound to it, which made it special. The loss of Hubbard and the lack of Kamal on this album hurt it IMO. I do agree that the guest appearances are good, I just rather hear Black Thought than guys like Petti Crack and Whale.
Albums that have worked their way into my rotation:
Drive-by Truckers - Brighter than Creation’s Dark
Black Keys - Attack and Release
Black Crowes - Warpaint (they’re playing 2 nights at the Neighborhood Theater in Nov.)
Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely
Punch Brothers - Punch (Chris Thile from Nickel Creek)
My Morning Jacket - Evil Urges
Back Door Slam - Roll Away (might actually be from late last year but I like it a lot)
Undecided / Haven’t given a complete listen yet:
Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
Death Cab - Narrow Stairs (ok, but over hyped)
Gavin Rossdale - Wanderlust (sometimes I think I like it, but his lyrics annoy me… “the city bus sounds just like a fridge”… wtf?)
Mother Tongue - Follow the Trail (like what I’ve heard so far)
Weezer - Red Album (couple of decent songs, but doubt I’ll listen to it a lot)
Coldplay - Viva la Vida (ok from what i’ve heard so far… i tend to get tired of them quickly though)
Howlin Rain - Magnificent Fiend
Old '97s - Blame it on Gravity
i have 1 invite to waffles.fm if anyone wants it. pm me.
Totally haven’t looked at this thread since day one nor have I gone back to see what has been mentioned, but Radiohead’s “In Rainbows” is currently rocking my world. This includes both discs tho, so listen to both before fully considering my opinion.
The second disc is better than the first IMO. I love track 2. Overall, there are too many slow songs for my taste but I have learned to dig them. However, the songs that rock do so pretty hard and have secured this album in 4th place for Radiohead’s best.
I’m trying to get used to the new Coldplay album… it’s way different from X&Y and Rush of Blood. Not bad, though. I really like “Violet Hill.”
Recently released first single off Slipknot’s new album, “All Hope is Gone”, sounds a lot like their stuff from Vol 3: The Subliminal Verses. I’m looking forward to more of this stuff being released. There is supposedly another song, “Psychosocial”, out there somewhere but I can’t find it.
The poppy turn The Police give the chorus just ruins the song for me. It’s better played a little darker and a lot more understated, in my opinion.
Let me guess you voted for David Cook in the American Idol final.
Let me guess you voted for David Cook in the American Idol final.
I am proud to say that, despite all my other incredibly lame and terrible musical guilty pleasures, I have NO CLUE who David Cook is. I assume from your post that he was an American Idol finalist, but know literally nothing about him.
I imagine this means you voted for whoever the other person was, probably a wholesome American-bred white girl since I don’t think one of those has won in a while. I’ll have you know I’m a huge fan of wholesome, American-bred white girls. I even like Debbie Gibson. So there.
