Listening to Slipknot’s new album All Hope Is Gone. Easily the best of their 4 albums. A few of the songs aren’t typical slipknot and will take a bit to grow on me, but the acoustic/slower songs aren’t too bad. I got the Special Edition, the 3 bonus tracks are pretty good even though one is a remix of a previous track.
Nationally, The Mars Volta’s The Bedlam in Goliath. They will be playing at the Asheville Civic Center on September 23rd.
Also TAB the Band, which just released Long Weekend. I saw them last Sunday at Verizon (they were opening act for STP and Black Rebel Motorcyle Club).
Locally, Sugar Glyder’s We Cracked the Sky. They will headline a show at Amos’ later this month on the 29th.
banner pilot’s new cd is dank.
John Mayer- Where the Light Is. Excellent Live album recorded last year in LA. He played an acoustic set, a set with the bluesy John Mayer Trio and a third set with the full band. Absolutely wails on the electric.
I picked this up the other day, very impressive set. I wasn’t really into John Mayer at all when he started hitting it big, his singles typically don’t showcase his talent. But I happened upon a concert one day on TV and was blown away by his talent. I saw him live at VT and been a fan ever since. He’s got some great skill on the guitar that goes mostly unnoticed.

Actually I had a similar experience with Mayer. I hated his music. Thought it was gay. I’d only heard him on radio. Then I saw a TV performance of him riffing away at some blues and was hooked. He’s phenomenal at guitar. Unfortunately the radio is only pushing poppy bubble gum hits instead of actually good music.
The following new CDs are ok to good, in no order:
The Slip by Nine Nich Nails
Rock What You Got by Superchick
A Little Bit Longer by The Jonas Brothers
Saturday=Youth by M83
Modern Guilt by Beck
Accelerate by REM
The Scarlett Johanssen CD of Tom Waits covers, surprisingly
The following new CDs are terrible:
Weezer by Weezer
That ridiculous 3Oh!3 crap all the kids love, whether it came out this year or not
Ghosts by Nine Inch Nails (yeah, I said it)
Hard Candy by Madonna
And then Ashlee Simpson’s new CD is somehow both stunningly bad and impossible to stop listening to.
The best album of 2008 is Untitled by Nas, and there is pretty much no chance of anything topping it. The worst album of 2008, HANDS DOWN, is Real Emotional Trash by Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks. Imagine everything you even kind of liked about Pavement replaced with everything you even kind of hated about They Might Be Giants. Actually, that’s not fair to They Might Be Giants because they’re fun and often clever. Everything you even kind of hated about Sufjan Stevens. That’s what that record is. It’s what would happen if Sufjan Stevens decided to write a concept album in the persona of Stephen Malkmus trying to ruin what little legacy he has left.

TNA, you are an odd bird man. I think those last few are pretty good, but Jonas Brothers? I’ve tried to avoid them and failed, and it was confirmed, I hate them and their cliche sound. I guess I’m just not getting how the same mind can appreciate more complex sound structures and better songwriting, yet also be pleased by bubblegum trash like those twits. It’s an interesting question. BTW, I have no idea who/what Superchick is. I’m scared to ask.

yep.
LOL… it’s called a power button. Theres no way you hate yourself enough to do that to you.

This is about the 10th time I’ve read this. Time for me to check out some Nas.
LOL. That is a high quality rant. I’m not sure that I agree, but big points for putting it out there. I think its a bit bland, which is an offense to the amazing Pavement albums, but it doesn’t get under my skin that much. Except for Gardenia. I want to know how much Sirius was paid to play that song every 15 minutes on every channel even remotely in the genre. The payola musta been HUGE.
BTW, I like some Sufjan. He might actually beat Conor Oberst in a pretentiousness showdown (is that possible??), but songs like The Mistress Witch of McClure pretty much make up for it.
And the winter moves about Illinois
When my sister picks a fight
With the Alexander boy
And my father locks the car
By the store
Still we figure out the keys
And follow him once more
Oh my God
We see it on the floor
The woman on the bed
The ankle brace she wore
Stones and sled
It could have been some other
The mind that knows itself
Has a mind to serve the other
And we run back
Scratching at the door
Scratching at the door
If I’m hiding in the sleeves
Of my coat
When my father runs undressed
He’s pointing at my throat
And my brother has a fit
In the snow
And the traffic stops for miles
We take him by the elbow
Oh my God
The shuffling at the floor
A mind that knows itself
Is a mind that knows much more
So we run back
Scrambling for cover
A mind that knows itself
Has a mind to kill the other
(Oh my God
No one came to our side
To carry us away from danger)
Oh my God
He left us now for dead
He left us now for dead
I’ve only heard the first single from the KoL record, and liked it. Can’t wait to hear the TVOTR record. Lots of positive early reviews on both.

Superchick is a Christian band who caters to high schoolers, specifically to high school girls. They’re fun and catchy and completely harmless. I’m a sucker for Christian music written for high schoolers.
I have two distinct requests for my music. I either want my music to be fun in a sort of way where it doesn’t take itself too seriously or to be legitimately good. I usually tend to focus more on lyrics than on the “music,” although I like to tell myself I can tell good music when I hear it. I really do like a little bit of everything, as long as it’s good at what it’s doing. So The Backstreet Boys were GREAT because they were unmatched for their time at creating perfect pop songs and Tom Waits is GREAT because he completely commits himself to “songwriter whose songs are amazing but will only enter the general public as covers because his voice isn’t radio-friendly.” The exception is ridiculous bullcrap like 3Oh!3 (SERIOUSLY, WTF?), and then music which fails to do what it set out to do (that’s you, Snoop Dogg’s Tha Doggfather or Sinead O’Connor’s Theology). Everything else is fair game. I have the weirdest iTunes, I swear.
As for The Jonas Brothers, why not? Their CD isn’t great and there are only a few stand-out songs, but they’re not terrible either and I’d much rather hear the younger crowd humming “Burnin’ Up” than something like Hawthorne Heights. Ugh. Sometimes you have to give in. For the record, their previous CD which took kind of a winking sarcastic look at the whole boyband fad (and therefore has to be completely ignored now, whoops) was pretty well done. They even make fun of Hanson, although it doesn’t work now that Hanson has developed into a really talented and world-conscious adult alternative band.

Wow, new TV on the Radio album, one of the top 5 bands out there right now I think, that’s exciting news.
Although I see the dude cut his afro, that’s a little disappointing…
Albums I’m Looking forward to:
Haste the Day - “Dreamer”
Underoath - “Lost in the Sound of Seperation”
It Dies Today “Untitled”
Anberlin - “Untitled”

I know. It’s like Samson cutting his locks :unhappy:
M83’s new album has slowly crept up and probably became my favorite album of the year so far. Cannot wait for their show at tremont. And that Nas album is garbage, and this is coming from a Nas defender.

That’s not all I listen to. I am very much into Classic Rock (Deep Purple, Yes, Kansas, Grand Funk Railraod, Toto) as well as Gov’t Mule, Dream Theater, QOTSA, King’s X, Sevendust, Rush…
But what do you suggest?

the list would be endless, but the classic rock references help…a lot. check out Protest the Hero, The Human Abstract, August Burns Red…we’ll start there.

Oh I love August Burns Red, have all their catalogue, but I’ll have to check out Protest the Hero and The Human Abstract.
Don’t know if you knew but Jimmy Ryan (original vocalist of HTD) has a new band and their album comes out in September. The name of the band is “Trenches”. Very melodic and spacey Metalcore.
