Best early to mid-nineties bands

Lately I’ve been getting back into the music of the early to mid-nineties. This was the time when 106.5 was just starting. It’s mostly grunge. To refresh your memory, these were my favorites along with my favorite song by them:

  1. Stone Temple Pilots

Who were the other great bands of this time?

Oasis

Oasis

Great band, but I consider them more late 90’s. I remember the first time I ever heard them. It was at my sister’s Bat Mitzvah which was in 1996.

Any list like this that doesn’t have Nirvana as the top band is meaningless.

Nirvana is 1

Hootie was huge

Metallica

Snoop

Cure

Offspring was huge too

Radiohead

Beavis and Butthaed

And U2

The Monkeeys

My two favorites from the early to mid nineties were Hootie and Blues Traveler

Gin Blossoms

Bush is up there for me, as are Gin Blossoms, Toad the Wet Sprocket, U2 (Achtung Baby = amazing album), and Smashing Pumpkins.

Weezer. This was back when they were still awesome. Their music sucks now.

Also, Better than Ezra and the Counting Crows came out with some great stuff then.

Oasis

Great Band. 1994’s Definitely Maybe and 95’s Morning Glory albums are just plain great.

Smashing Pumpkins and STP are favs of mine too.

Sponge, Lit, Filter
I liked Hole as well.

All the Alice in Chains breakoffs: Mad Season and Temple of the Dog

Tintin

Lot of great bands listed so far. I love 90’s Rock!!

I forgot about Sponge. They were awesome. Lit was definitely late 90s. But still very awesome. Hole had some good stuff with Violet and Doll Parts. Anything after that was kind of week IMO.

Well, I’m not going to put them at number 1 when this is my list of favorites and they are not my favorite. They were a great band, but the bands I put ahead of them I just like better. I’m sure if we did a poll of who the greatest band of the 90s was, nirvana would be at the top. This list wasn’t a poll, it was my top 10.

BTW, I left my favorite band off the list altogether. Basically because I still listen to them all the time despite the fact that they haven’t been active in over 12 years.

Sublime is my all-time favorite band. But this was my list of bands I’ve recently gotten back into. Sublime has never faded for me.

I submit to the growing list:

Black Crowes
Ween
PJ Harvey

Lots of solid bands from the 90s… Rage Against the Machine should be included as well.

Geez, not one mention of Soundgarden? Maybe I’m in the minority here but I think Nirvana is overrated. I’ll also add:

No Doubt
Fuel (personal favorite)
Dave Matthews Band
Lenny Kravitz
Rage Against the Machine
The Cranberries
Goo Goo Dolls
The Wallflowers

I mentioned Soundgarden in the original post.

All of those bands are awesome. I like some the Goo Goo Dolls stuff, but too much of it ends up on Lite 102.9.

The Cranberries were probably the best girl fronted band of the 90s.

Alice in Chains was far and away my favorite band… I actually saw them with the new singer in Winston last year. Couldn’t look any more different but he sounded good
