Bilas on our weekend
Well, if WE are the host school, then why are UNC-Chapel Hole and Winthrop playing in it and we are NOT! Fordham is playing in their THIRD Preseason NIT, while the Niners have played in NONE! As in NADA, ZILCH, ZERO, NEVER, etc. Geez!
I found it humorous that the Observer disguised one of their chapel hill pre-game articles (remember, they don’t do pregames) with the headline “Possible Congestion Around Arena Tonight”. It’s funny because it appeared in the sports section, not the traffic section.

So f****** typical.

I think Bilas is sugar-coating both games because of his friendship with Lutz. We were shaky in a win over a questionable and small Hofsta team and we got boat raced by NTS, a team that will likely finish outside the top 200 rpi.

Although his spin is helpful for the program I don’t think fans should be fooled. Our lack of defense and rebounding is a huge concern and we will lose many more frustrating games this season with a few surprising wins sprinkled in here and there. Sound familiar?

Interesting.

very interesting…considering he endorses a pessimistic opinion about an entire season after 1 loss as truth (AS A FAN, i might add).

people sicken me…especially after all the excitement on this board looking forward to basketball season. if you’re not going to support the team, why do you hang around this board, season or not? you’re wasting your time.

We’ll be able to compare both teams later since Hofssta plays Georgia State and Syracuse while North Texas plays Louisiana Lafayette and potential 49ers opponent Nebraska.

CAA coaches picked Hofstra to win their league so someone feels they’re a decent team, ds. North Texas… picked second in the Sun Belt West was the game the 49ers always seem to lose at home each year. I would be surprised if Hofstra doesn’t easily win 20 games again.

There’s nothing questionable about Hofstra. They’re a legit team that will win a lot of games and likely cause problems for someone in March. Despite the debacle on Sunday, that was a good win the day before.

So, apparently, I’m not allowed to be a fan AND a realist?

I have to be overtly giddy and blindly optimistic about a team’s performance and future even when blatantly and obviously unrealistic?

I had no idea there were rules for being a fan. How 'bout sharing that rule book with me when you get a chance.

One thing we do agree on…This IS Niner Basketball!!!

i didnt say anything about the ‘rules’ of being a fan. i was saying, why waste your time spending so much time on the niners sports forum if you’re going to give up and be pessimistic after ONE. ONE, ONEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE LOSS.

Very well said hootie…

The only thing you forgot to mention is that I am also the 2006 NNN #1 Overall Draft Pick!!
Our lack of defense and rebounding is a huge concern and we will lose many more frustrating games this season with a few surprising wins sprinkled in here and there. Sound familiar?
I have actually been pretty happy with our rebounding so far. We out-rebounded Hofstra 43-30. NT out-rebounded us 33-30 but I think that was mostly due to us missing so many long range shots (we had 43 missed shots).

Defense is definitely a major concern though (as it is every year). Don’t most coaches recruit players that can score and teach them how to play defense? We have plenty of guys that can score, but as a team we play terrible defense (especially in transition). I really wish Lutz would do something about this… schedule some defense only practices, hire an assistant coach to focus on defense, scrap the junk defenses… I don’t see any of that happening though. It’s a shame because we have a lot of talent on this team but we will never reach our full potential.

I’d like to see more assists. Pitch and go, ally hoop. I would also like to see more fast break points. It just hasn’t been the same since Basden left.

Bobby had a reasonable schedule for this team, as stated in another thread.

I think it was :

Friday, November 10 - UNC Asheville
Wednesday, November 15 - Hofstra
Wednesday, November 22 - at Syracuse
Saturday, November 25 - Georgia State

with the N. Texas game added for 11/12. Progressing thru Asheville, N. Texas and then Hofstra (over 5 days) made A LOT MORE sense than Hofstra and N. Texas in under 24 hours.

I’m still rather pissed that he had to make schedule change because of Charlotte being the host school (or whatever it is) for the preseason NIT. IMO, the priorities are MISguided. The Athletic Department should look out for their OWN best interests first. The priority SHOULD BE its own programs first, foremost and always.

The manipulation of the schedule tells me otherwise. Proof that there are too many agendas in the Athletic Dept?? I don’t know nearly enough to prove that, but I am disappointed to be thinking about it.

I must be an idiot becuse I don’t understand any of this. Why are we the host school for a tourney we aren’t playing in, nor is it being played at our home arena? Hopefully someone that knows the scoop on this will answer, instead of someone pretending to know.

Finally something we can all agree on…

We are not the host of the preaseason NIT. We are the host when the NCAA tournament comes to Charlotte in 2008. The NCAA wanted to use the preaseason NIT as a “dry run” for the '08 NCAA tournament and therefore didn’t want us playing another game in Charlotte on the same night.

That is how it was explained to me. It may or may not be correct. Obviously the original scedule would have been much better for us.

Correct on avoiding the conflicting games BUT also the “dry run” includes using our Athletic Dept staff to run the event, thus no way we could manage two games on the same night.

Also, we wanted to add more home games and ended up with North Texas. Others in consideration were Wichita St and Butler. Very strong mid-majors.

Now in '08, when “we host” the NCAA, it’s not on campus though. It’ll be downtown like in the past correct?

Maybe North Texas will prove me wrong (they do have a VERY weak schedule and may just win a bunch of games this year) but I would have jumped at home games vs. Wichita St and/or Butler and replaced any of the home games scheduled this year. Hofstra would be the only exception.

Both those teams are smart scheduling. Both are quite losable, but would help out the ol’ RPI regardless.
