Campus in the Future

What are some of the things any of you have heard about the future of our campus?? I found this picture on the facilities page:

From the looks of it, the belk tower will be bricked over, I think this is going to look awesome. I know that this plan is dynamic but this quad area in between cone, belk gym and Halton looks amazing.

One thing i would like to know is what are they doing on the road near the new alumni house? is that just a culvert replacement or is it something much more than that?

Next here is a blow up of leftys signature:

This plan looks good but it shows that the plan is just a rendering and nothing final. The front entrance doesn’t have columns lining 49, no roundabout, the new baseball stadium is nowhere to be found, and even some of the new buildings around Halton are different. The belk tower is once again bricked. I have done some preliminary CAD work on if we expanded transamerica field and added stands on the other side, we would have to reroute the stream behind the field.
As for this rendering we are planning to control the stream at the bridge some how and dam up the water and make a lake of the stream. We then add docks for?? Crew? If we plan to have crew do we plan to have? I don’t want this discussion to turn into that though. I just want input on somethings any of you are hearing.

I heard that getting anywhere close to completing any of this would require many many fantasy dollars.

In one of the previous plans it says that where the stream is, is a flood zone and they do plan on daming it and having it fill that whole vallye over there. I seem to remember it saying that will accomadate water sports. So most likely crew. I’ll look to see if I can find what I had seen. There used to be illustrations of the new entrance on 29. I’ll get back to this thread later today.

clt says to ignore those sketches b/c they ignore the topography of campus.

and where is the damn football stadium?

This master plan was done quite some time ago. Dr. Phil is working on getting a new one together soon… the outcome of which will be very interesting.

*** A while back (year ago maybe) I asked Dr. Phil about bricking the tower, when it will be done, etc. He said that even though it was included in the master plan as a recommendation, he does not believe it was ever vetted with the Belk family. And, in order to move forward with that idea, the family would have to sign off on it… just out of respect since they donated it. The master plan is not really set in stone but rather there to provide some guidance. Most things in the future will be pretty close. I also asked the vice pres. at Facilities Mgmt. how much money bricking the tower would cost, and he said about $2mm to start…:wow:

The road near the alumni building is being widened… up to the road at the alumni building. I assume they are going to move a boat load of dirt on either side of the current road for the widening… probably will get it from “Dirt Mountain” at the site of the new parking deck.

By the way, the chancellor is extremely responsive to emails. I definitely would not waste his time with meaningless inquiries, but he is very knowledgeable, very helpful, and extremely upfront and honest. So, if you have any quick specific questions, he probably wouldn’t mind answering. Also, just so you know, he was the main one in charge of the last master plan (before he left), so he has VERY specific knowledge about the university’s plan and the possibilities thereof…

How about this cheap paint rendering…?

Edited: dang you can see. It’s the Bonnie Cone Memeorial Football Stadium and it is to be placed near the Chancellor’s front lawn.

That’s a lot of fantasy dollars. I wonder if they will take pledges to help pay for it?

If I remember correctly, that one-way road will be the last part of a loop road around campus, which will now include 2 traffic circles.

I would like to know what buildings they have up next, besides the student union and uptown building. They will be completing several academic buildings this year. What’s next?

He is very helpful! If he doesn’t reply to your email with in a day or two he even apologizes for being tardy on responding! Great communicator, just like he promised when he came in.

… lol

Man, that painting does make the campus look flat… I like how since the artist did not know (obviously) how the new buildings will look, he/she just made them rectangular boxes. The Robinson Hall building looks way different. Also, if you look over where Woodward Hall should be on the painting, that area is COMPLETELY different than what they envisioned.

I like the idea of the “North Lawn”… sort of like what they have at the University of Virginia. I hope they are still going to do that. Not sure with space at a premium if they’ll do that.

I think the planners/current administration is going to live to regret placing the parking decks WITHIN the academic core of the campus instead of outside on the other side of the road. I guess they can always tear them down. I believe (according to master plan again) they are planning on tearing down the one next to the Cone building and putting an academic building to make the area in front of the Student Activities Center an “arcade.”

That’s really interesting. Of course, I know what this topic will turn into (as does practically every other topic of conversation), but I did not realize they were planning a man-made lake on campus.

One other note: Is there going to be enough student housing? This was an issue years ago and the school is rapidly growing.

I believe they are planning on adding student housing every year. Most of it will be located over near Witherspoon/Squires. That is why the put the student health center on that side of campus. I have also hear they will be razing smurf village and building new housing there. There should be enough rooms on campus for half the student population. Whether that happens or not is yet to be seen. Anyone know how many beds there are right now?

It is my opinion that building the Greek Village on campus will help to boost campus residence numbers, directly and indirectly.

I know they are in planning phase to add another section of on campus housing like Squires. It will be where the current parking lot is next to Squires. Hopefully, they will make it similar but a little different just to add some character.

**By the way, does anyone know when the new alumni center will be done?
I donated $ for that and would like to see the inside. The outside looks great. It adds a lot to campus.

any clue when the next set of renderings will be? One thing i do like about UNC Charlotte is that it is dynamic. Its not some old landlocked school that only renovates an old building every 5 years.

Chancellor said last fall that the lake idea wasn’t going to happen anymore if I recall.

That makes sense. How many crew times are there in NC anyway? You can’t exactly compete in crew in the A-10 because you’d be taking 10-hour drives with the skulls every weekend to hit the regatta at Temple, etc.

 Yay!
Of course it’s all a fantasy…
