Campus Tour Disappointment

I need to vent and this is the place for it.

I go with my senior daughter on an official visit to UNC Charlotte today.
As any other parent knows, I have tried to stay low-key and not push her
toward any particular school. Maybe I was setting myself up for disappointment
as I was hoping to formally hear a presentation to my daughter about all the new
exciting things at this University that I attended many moons ago.

So we step outside with our group and the female student tour leader introduces
Herself exactly this way.

Hi everyone my name is —, I am from Chapel Hill, home of the tarheels , woot, woot.

I blurted out in a serious tone – “We did not need to hear that”. I have no idea what this
Young lady said for the next 10 minutes as I was still biting my tounge and trying not to make a scene in front of others in the group.

The day was beautiful and the campus looked nice and was full of students walking around, but my wife and daughter said afterwards, that tour was boring.

If the other schools tours don’t blow this one away, I will be surprised.
I could go on but I will stop here.

Can you imagine giving a tour at Chapel Hill and saying Hi, I am from Raleigh, home of
the Wolfpack woot-woot.

Absolutely sickening.

What was her name? Time for her to get a new job and NN.N is the team to do it.

Not to be over dramatic, but seriously, somebody needs to know.

As a student it makes me sad to see how much Tar Heel gear is on campus.
Hopefully football changes that.

the Wolfpack woot-woot.
This is nuts, and the tour guide probably wouldn’t even understand why. You should email the Director of Undergraduate Admissions Claire Kirby (ckirby@uncc.edu) and copy the new Director of Alumni Affairs Jenny Jones (Jenny.Jones@uncc.edu), and ask Kirby if this is part of their message. Perhaps she can explain why your tour guide showed more enthusiasm for another school than her own.

It doesn’t sound like having her not mention the Tarheels in her pitch is the real solution here, she had the daughter of an alumnus on her tour and apparently did not close the sale. How much easier does it get? Does the Office of Undergraduate Admissions not view the tours as a sales pitch for prospective students? While the Alumni Affairs office probably has nothing to do with these tours they should consider that a large percentage of our alumni base has children heading towards college and the impact a bad experience can have.

Unfortunately I have heard other parents on this board describe similar experiences on the tours. Good luck to you and your daughter. I hope she makes the best choice for her, and I am sorry if Charlotte has missed out on the chance to have a second generation Niner join the family.

Might be worth to share this story on social media outlets, get more voices to respond.

I saw “official visit” and thought of the kids I had on campus today… when you email the person in charge, you should suggest that seek me out on how to do a campus tour, not only am I coach, but I’m alumni, and I get nearly every kid i bring in on an official visit(for a combo of reasons, great program/ facilities/ and amazing education), I know interesting facts, and describe everything the university is doing/ has done recently… it’s pretty easy the campus sells itself…

I’ll put forth my chapel hatred as i did to some co-ed the other week that was wearing a wakeforest shirt in the SAC.

I asked her why she was wearing the shirt, “my friend plays basketball there”, I replied “does she wear a Charlotte shirt for her on Wakes Campus?” She said, “no, why, they’re a bigger school”?" I said, “We’re 5 times bigger than wake and our athletics routinely out perform theirs” She replied, “I root for UNC tho”… so here this girl is wearing a wake shirt, saying she roots for UNC, and has no love for our school, I then gave her a 20 min lecture on why chapel hill is the devil and they are the welfare mentality (they deserve everything without any work or penalty) that is ruining our country, her friend was wise to say that she is a fan of the school she goes too… If I were giving campus tours I would weed out these degenerates and make them look else where and only get the right minded individuals attend our school, I also told that girl that I carry a paintball gun on campus and shoot green paintballs at those that wear other schools shirts… I’m officially an old crazy cranky man

GREAT post. I hate losing a legacy Niner; hopefully your daughter will give the school another chance and decide based upon what’s best for her (wherever that might be).

Yeah, sucks the tour guide was a idiot but hopefully just a tour will not sway someone’s opinion of whether or not to attend. Hopefully the academics, needed major, etc will hold more weight in the decision making process.

This sounds eerily similar to my visit last year with my daughter (I posted about it on here as well)…except our guide didn’t actually mention any other school (thank god—I probably would have lost it). She was just horrible at her job and showed no “school spirit” at all…the tour was just very bad…luckily my daughter chose Charlotte anyway and so far loves it (after 5-6 weeks on campus). BTW, East Carolina’s tour was the best, BY FAR of the schools we visited.

I have told every bastard wearing Carolina crap on campus that if they like Carolina so much, they should’ve gone there. You go to Charlotte, you support the 49ers, or you GTFO.

I have not seen quite as much Tarhole crap this year, but still too much for my taste.

I think with football, there will be less and less. You can already see that happening. Freshmen are excited about football. There also seems to be more 49ers gear available than last year.

It is a shame that your daughter was greeted to UNC Charlotte that way. If I were you, I would be outraged. I am outraged just by reading this. I think she should be fired right away. I would write a letter or send an email to the department that is in charge of the tours and tell them what happen, and demand that it be dealt with and not happen again in the future. Hearing about this crap makes my blood boil.
