Charlotte Biz + Development News šŸ—

I’m too stupidly scared to understand that response I suppose. Should I assume none of the greenway is sketchy? Some parts are wooded area that I would assume are isolated at certain periods. I wouldn’t let my wife and young kids walk alone in parts of Charlotte during the day. Seems like your response is unnecessary for someone that already stated has not been on the greenway.

Like anywhere in any metro in the world, be aware of your surroundings. I have never seen anything personally on the greenway that has made me feel uneasy, and I used to walk the freedom park to noda corridor every day (not the whole length. I lived kinda in the middle so some days I would go one direction, other days the other direction.

My friend in pineville said it’s pretty common to see dudes sitting behind some apartments that back up to the new stretch of greenway there smoking weed in the evening, so if you consider that sketchy then yes there are some sketchy areas.

Stick to daytime use and it’s plenty safe, but nowhere is ever 100% safe.

As a serious response, I do not believe that the greenways are unsafe. There are many many miles of greenways in this county alone and you hear about crime and weird stuff in some areas quite rarely.

I ride the greenway on my bicycle up to school each and every day, starting in uptown and ending in NoDa. Anywhere between 5am and midnight, sometimes later. The entirety of the little sugar creek greenways I paved, although the section connecting Uptown to Freedom Park is closed because Atrium is renovating a few of their buildings, it should reopen in the Fall.

I’ve ridden the whole of the greenway north of campus and there are some sections that are very beautiful. About 1/3 is fine gravel, but the rest is paved.

In meck county, most are paved I’d say, though I’m not certain of that statement.

Safety is very relative and dependent on who you are, how you carry yourself, and your life experiences. I have never had a bad situation on the greenways, especially because of how popular they are. I’d argue it’s about as safe as hiking at Crowders Mountain.

Many people use them as recreational pathways, I use them as roads.

clt says describe your greenway experience

The ideal example doesn’t exist in the United States because all the public transport (mainly streetcars) were ripped out after the development of the car and due to influence by petroleum, rubber and auto industries in most cities.

This resulted in a nearly complete destruction of previous infrastructure causing medium sized cities like Charlotte to have to start over.

Even New York has suffered from a lack of investment in public transport in the past.

The whole thing is basically a negative feedback loop.

Transit was destroyed, people started driving cars, only low income people kept using buses, buses became stigmatized and scary to middle class and above, and now it’s gonna take 100 years to reverse it all.

And it results in an incredible amount of money going towards multiple cars per family, pollution, road repair, poor land use for parking, poor land use in general and a lack of walking by our society which is horrible for our health outcomes.

I could go on and on but I’m not educated on the subject. You can google for more sources for this type of information.

People like driving cars because it gives them greater personal autonomy.

There is no greater personal autonomy than being able to walk to the store instead of it being 2 miles away.

But yes, that is a draw. There’s no real counter to it other than roads being paved by the government, so in reality you’re just traveling in government sanctioned areas. Whereas walking gives you the most freedom. If those paved roads for cars were replaced by streetcar lines (like they once were), sizeable areas to walk, alongside no parking lots and close together businesses, then you’d honestly feel no less autonomy than driving.

I dont understand why people hate mass transit. You can only build so many roads. Build the options out. I live in Gaston County and to get from Meck to Gaston you have to cross a river and you cant keep building wider bridges. I can not wait for the day that I can walk or bike or when I am too old make the short drive to the Belmont station and ride into town or campus.

What’s your point? Every major city has transit police assigned to their subway /metro system.

Have never felt unsafe in the light rail before and seen police presence plenty of times, especially for busy times / big events.

Our problem and a lot of what is discussed in that thread is how infrequent our trains run since COVID. It’s not as convenient which definitely impacts ridership. I work a few blocks from a station and live off of Harris Blvd but still drive to work because the train only runs every 20 minutes. If we had trains running every 7-8 minutes, I’d gladly give up my monthly deck and ride the train everyday.

The women’s soccer team coming to Legion Memorial Stadium aren’t minor league. They’ll be in the USL Super League, which has been granted tier 1, alongside the NWSL.

The Anthem games are tons of fun! Took me a while to learn the rules to the sport, and they’re not very good, but I’m here for it.
