we need a shooter.
I have to say, I agree. He showed a lot more confidence today and showed that he is by far the closest thing we have to a shooter. 3-5 from behind the arc ainât too bad. He doesnât necessarily have to start, but at least give him close to starter minutes like he got today. Way to go, Benny!
I second that cltniners. I expect with the absence of Mayfield that he gets in the game much more, especially after his performance today.
Way to go Ivan!
I agree.
No thanks. Love what he brought in the game though and I hope he gets more opportunities with Mayfield out.
Where was clark tonight? Thorne and benny both looked good out there today. Happy to see T-Will hit a 3 too.
Shout out/thanks to UMass for shooting 37% from the charity stripe and 17 TOs.
He was able to stretch the defense making it easier to get the ball inside in the 2nd half. That being said, when he was in we were running a lot of 2-3 zone. I like using him more and I think we did a good job playing the 2-3, so I think it is something we can play more of as the season goes along.
Great team effort.

In the pregame they said that clack was out with an ankle injury.

Clark was out with an ankle injury, but hopefully he will be back for the Temple game Wednesday.

That makes sense thenâŚthanks!
Ditto
Benny burned them when they went zone and made a couple of excellent post feeds - UMass fouling kept him from getting deserved assists.
Without Benny, we probably would have seen a heavy diet of 2-3 today. So yes, he helps a ton, situationally, and should probably see some more floor time whenever we can get by on defense with him.
10-15 mpg for him wouldnât be so bad. Gives him a chance to contribute on offense without giving up too much on defense.
But really, everyone played great today. Complete team effort.
I agree he helped a great deal and this was certainly his best gameâŚbut START?!? Thatâs a bit of knee jerk reaction donât you think? He is too slow and does not fight through screens well. He is a big defensive liability right now.
I do like him as a chess piece however. âYou want to go 2-3 on us? Ok then I will sub Benny in to gun threes. Want to switch back to man? Thatâs fine too. I will sub back in T-Will to drive to the hoop.â Thatâs where I see value in Benny right now.
I would agree, but thereâs intrinsic value in always having a guy on the floor who can knock down the 3. It opens the inside a little more, which is where our strength lies.
No. He gave up fifteen on the other side. He was as lost on defense as Plavich.
Any chance Clt is trolling us because we always want to start who ever had a hot game?
He is far from our best defensive player but these other comments are ridiculous. Just because he is the white guy that shoots 3âs doesnât mean heâs non-existent on defense.
He was in the game when we stretched our lead to 8âŚso he apparently wasnât escorting anyone to the basket during that stretch!!
I watched him on âDâ. He has good size and plays âteamâ defense well. We do have to switch more when he playsâŚbut whatâs wrong with that? If he knows what to do and when to do it in a switch defenseâŚwhy does he have to fight through screens?? Briscoe was short and weak and couldnât guard anyone in man-to-man even when we did switch on screens for him! Briscoe lost PT because he was a defensive liability. Benny is much better defensively than that.
I get tired of people slamming him on DefenseâŚassuming thatâs the case against him.
Heâs not that bad on DâŚespecially when heâs contributing with jumpshots. We penetrated their zone on back to back occasions (EVic & PH) when they drove middle and just looked at Benny (they slid out a little and gave up a slash to the rim).
I donât think he should start either. But stop with the over-exaggerated poor defense angle. Itâs just not true.
I think Benny has at least earned some more playing time. Starting role? No, but I do expect to see more of him over the course of the next few games. Hopefully he continues to make some threes and force teams to think twice about packing it inside against us defensively.
At this point, what I would do for just one consistent 3 point threat.
