Any formation of the league will be done in concert with those partners. They arenāt going to form then tell tv networks to take a hike. Those discussions center around the tv partners so they know who to invite.
They have pretty much already started doing this right in front of us. Canāt believe Dodd doesnāt see this. Like I said yesterday all they have to do is skim 6 schools from the top of the ACC and the B10 and SEC already have the foundation of the super conference. Those 2 already have a strategic alliance and already control the CFP getting more money and trying to guarantee themselves the top 2 spots in the playoff every year. The networks hung the Pac12 out to dry and helped force that conference to fall apart, while skimming the top brands off for the B10. Iām not sure how anyone can watch this and not think a 2 conference superleague is where we are headed and itās well on itās way to being a reality.
For this to work.
Wonāt the top schools (not the conferences, because then you involve the teams that presumably they want to drop like Wake, Vandy, Miss State) have to form some new organizational body before the negotiations start?
Otherwise they could be sued for collusion and market fixing and all kinds of other bad things?
Seems like they have to lay out a time line of what they are going to do in plain site years ahead of time to make sure no new contracts are signed and to avoid legal entanglements. And they are going to have to time this for when their current media deals expire unless they have an out in the contract for dissolving the league.
This seems like itās going to take a long time.
Key points I see.
-
They have to time it so that all the top schools are free at the same time.
-
They have to time it so they can exit their conferences without running into any grant of rights issues.
-
They have to time it so they can exit their conferences without running into any legal issues when they drop the also rans.
-
They will have to anticipate how to handle state legislatures who rule that the state flagship and the flagship junior have to be in the same conference. Exp. UNC Chapel hill and NC state. For state schools this is a huge risk and thereās nothing they can do about it.
-
They will have to be careful not to collude with media organizations or risk lawsuits.
-
Probably dozens of other issues I have not even thought about.
Thinking this through.
I think we MIGHT see an announcement of future plans in the near future. I donāt see anyway else they can do it without legal apocalypse.
They lay out a plan that says āwe intend to fulfill all existing media and conference obligations up to date x/x/x and then we intend to leave our existing conferences and form this new organization.
clt says Dan Morgan had an interesting comment last night. Panthers are not big fans of NIL players, he views them as entitled.
Worth noting that Dan Furman is the brother of former Charlotte baseball player, and current Cleveland Guardians prospect, Nate Furman.
Letās just put a big olā QR code on the football field.
clt wonders if bama fb $ is going towards this house
Probably part of the NIL package.
No doubt organized youth sports is for the more well to do folks. Itās one of the main things holding US soccer back, imo.
