Former Niner Ryan Murphy:
Regarding MSOC and baseball, I have often said the same thing.
Always thought we should have been much better in Baseball.
Could probably add softball to this discussion.
Has it been announced yet if Charlotte is opting into the house settlement and is going to pay players directly?
And if the answer is yes then how is that justified?
How can we collect the student fees we have and then pay players?
That means a percentage of the player pay is provided by money from student loans.

Yes, as posted recently, all full-time AAC schools are opting in. Havenāt heard any specifics about the Niners.
Football-only members Army West Point and Navy are not allowed by federal law to participate.
My recollection is that USF is the only school thus far to announce it will participate at 100% - initially $20.5M.
From The Athletic
Where does that $10mm of annual niner NIL come from?
While talking to Mike last fall at a tailgate he mentioned this.
He was adamant that Student fees should not go to pay players. So thatās good. He said they would use other revenue sources such as the aac media tv money and the state gambling funds. He said you can make the case that without football and basketball that money wouldnāt come in so he felt ok with that. The challenge is that money now has to be replaced in the budget with more money from somewhere and the last I heard state legislature was not interested in permitting fee increases.
Havenāt heard an annual set amount. Just know that it will at least average out to be $3.33M annually to satisfy the $10M over 3 years AAC directive.
As the ESPN piece noted, it could be:
Of course, the AAC has set a minimum. Schools can exceed that, as USF intends to do per their announcement last year.
It all goes into the same pot with student fees. You canāt differentiate between sources of revenue if itās flowing through the athletic dept. Iām not feeling it. I need more clarity.
This whole NIL thing makes me want to vomit. I get it from the athletes perspective but I donāt think this āmodelā can last.
clt is now tired of this kid
Really depends on how they manage it. They could have an NIL fund that keeps the funds separate from donations/dees/etc. and all payments come out of that fund.
Or they could say we have 2 million in gambling and tv revenue, its all in the same pot, but we will not pay out in excess of 2 mil.
Either way though that money was being counted on to fund operations and coaches and will now be redirected so new revenue must be brough in to replace that - no matter if its a sep account or just managed in the same pot.
The part I do like is Mike recognizes that using fees to pay athletes is not ok. In other words if we are bringing in 2 mil in tv and gambling money we absolutely can not justify paying out 2.5 million.
Here is the rub. What is the brand new revenue stream that we have come across that we didnāt have last year that we can consider completely separate from student fees and devote to NIL? Does that exist?
If not they are just playing with numbers.
They couldnāt do it without the student fees. Thatās the bottom line as far as I see it right now.
Well the gambling income from the state is brand new and the aac payout is going up so a portion of that is brand new. You are also getting some folks giving tight to nil funds.
You are right though -
Student fees are what make it all possible.
We need more corporate donors, and very rich donors. I am hoping the new luxury boxes and luxury seating we are putting into the stadium will help attract some.
Also, I hope we will do more advertising. Maybe a corporate name on the field. Although, I donāt know if that interferes with the McColl-Richardson name. Judy was very short sighted on that stuff. Still canāt believe she sold the name of the stadium permanently as Richardson stadium.
This is the problem.
I hope to god that she was cornered financially and had to make that deal. Otherwise she sucks worse than we thought.
FWIW, people had to sign off on that. Iām not familiar with the chain on something like that but would think at least to the BOT.
The contract was stupidly simple. It was like 4 sentences long.
No idea how that even made it thru legal.
