College athlete compensation - NIL etc 💰

I don’t get that impression about Saban. I think there are genuinely old school coaches who prefer the past, where the coaches had more authority. I also believe there are coaches who genuinely value degrees and an education. Saban’s genius was building a culture, not paying players under the table.

Oh c’mon man. I’m sure he prefers an old school culture, but there were message board threads full of pictures of all the Dodge Hellcats, etc he was buying players with.

This is good though, right. Would you rather him say, it’s inevitable and only the strongest should survive.

Now I do find it ironic that he thinks the current trend is bad becaues it creates an uneven playing field, all the while having it’s own tv contract and never be required to join a conference.

Just not buying it. Did things happen under the table, of course. But Saban directly buying players hellcats? That’s message board /social media baiting. Especially coming from an OSU fan. Is he implying that OSU can dominate the Big10 “cleanly”, yet Alabama can not? Defintely baiting in my opinion.

Serious question. If a “super league” (why it’s not called a new division is beyond me, maybe to prepare for the uncoupling of non revenue sports from revenue sports?) actually comes to be, how many schools does it need to maintain viability and not get stale?

I ask that cause I keep hearing about the sec and Big10 breaking away but if that’s all there is then that’s gonna get real boring real fast. Especially for some of the middle and lower teams in those leagues.

All this greediness by the leagues is going to kill the golden goose!

I question whether the P2 really want to retain all of their current programs.

I think they’d like to cut as much as a quarter of each league, though they may want to add a couple of ACC programs.

But what you’re saying about staleness is something I’ve been saying for closer to 15 years… to review:

  • Each program will lose a home game (they all currently play unbalanced H/A schedules) unless they extend the regular season to 14 games
  • The SEC was set to lose their FCS fluff weekend - though I understand that may be going away anyway.
  • They will have to play more true road games than they’ve had to play, in less controlled environments (eg rigged for advantage)
  • Roughly half of the teams (or more) will end each season with losing records.
  • No salary cap to encourage parity (currently the case)
  • No draft to encourage parity
  • The last 3 factors are going to destroy fan engagement as soon as the fanbases of a lot of programs that are used to at least posting a winning record and going to a bowl realize that they are stuck in a permanent rut of losing seasons and no postseason.

But yeah. The super league is a SUPER idea.
