Every kid is asking about NIL during recruiting. Thatās their number one concern now.
So Iām sure itās the number one concern of veterans considering transferring.
This is the new reality.
And another reason we should split off from the P4.

Our AD told me that nationally most NIL money is not new money, itās just redirected money from what were gifts to the AD to the collectives. Schools like Bama can encourage that because their TV deals and corp sponsors are more than enough. For schools like us and Coastal - trying to fund an NIL while also increasing operating funds AND capital improvements is insanely difficult.
clt will continue to donate to the school, not NIL
To me it sounds like the fans at Coastal Carolina spoke! They said this is too much! These young men get a free education, room, and bored. Their talent is not that of an NFL player. I hope this happens more.
Many more to come from all different angles.
Here we go with Title IX now.
Sigh.
The schools need to sever all contact with the collectives so they can show no involvement or they need rules for full involvement with full transparency so that the people that fund NIL can pick who they want to pay the money to.
This ridiculous mantra of give me something for nothing has to stop somewhere.
I fear that in the future there may be many less opportunities for athletic grant in aid because of the P4 split off into a revenue sharing organization. They can simply write new rules that allow them to cut down sports to the bare minimum.
Imagine a world where there is only menās basketball and football and enough womenās sports to satisfy title IX compliance.
That could happen. And wonāt that be better for everyone!
SMH
Totally agree. Trying to make things right for the top 30 or so programs that generate insane money the system is Going to destroy the world of college athletics that has helped provide education for millionās of athletes in non revenue sports.
This is like watching a train wreck in slow motion. Most people can see whatās happening but no one will step in and try to stop it.
Iām still waiting for a lawsuit against using students fees for this and an athlete challenging eligibility years.
The Title IX challenges are long overdue, regardless of any of our political / social opinions are about that topic. Itās a federal law, though it has been subject to interpretation even with a 3 prong test for fairness. Iām just shocked it took this long.
Will be interesting to see what the courts do with this. Itās a complete mess. Hopefully college athletics, in some form or fashion, survive.
I had this random thought that some of the big boys might have to convert to an employee / employer situation with all the rights and obligations associated with that, while the courts may carve out an alternative elective traditional model, that while still subject to Title IX, is still based on scholarships and maybe cost of attendance payments.
Itāll then be up to schools to see whether they wanna play for profit minor league football or college football. The NCAA would remain as the governing body for the latter. The former would basically just be the XFL on campus.
If they move to employee employer status for menās football and basketball, does that remove all Title IX concerns?
And if so. Oh boy. Those schools are gonna be cheaping out on the rest of the sports BIG TIME.
And for clarity my only problem with Title IX is that it didnāt have carve outs for sports traditionally played by men and not women (football and wrestling) which resulted in lots of cuts to menās sports around the country.
Yep, thatās my take on where we are headed and how they will avoid Title IX and the NCAA. The super conferences will play for profit football with the players being employees.
Not sure what they will do in hoops. Thatās where it gets dicey.
Since at most schools football and basketball finance all the other sports will be interesting to see if making them employees and running those sports as for profit enterprises results in massive cuts and dropping a lot of other sports.
Thatās what Iām afraid may be the unintended consequence of all this.
And this is the endgame of destroying college athletics.
Can the G5ās and leftover P5ās regionalize. We have a chance to draw people in by becoming what people want college sports to be. Carolina conference with ECU, Charlotte, App, Wake, Coastal, etc etc. Probably will never happen though as we canāt have anything nice
Ive come around to wanting the survivor regional conferences. I think itās what could / will save college athletics (it will also likely be a financial necessity when the networks divert all of their resources to supporting those super conferences, which are going to basically supplant the XFL as minor league football).
However, I probably differ from a few people in thinking that there are going to be some pretty decently well regarded P5 programs that are going to get relegated or even opt out (administration tired of the arms race and the diversion of the academic mission).
Definitely heading for a reckoning in next 3 to 5 years. This could go in so many ways.
What hapoens when the economy takes a serious downturn. Been awhile so each month that goes by means the intensity of that down turn probably goes up. Goldilocks was a fairy tale so unintended consequences of huge financial decisions will be exposed.
