Jerome Allen took over at Penn in December 2009 when the team started 0-7. The team included Denzel Washington’s son. Maybe Coach Allen realized there was an opportunity to get out front and recruit rich kids whose parents wanted them to go to an Ivy League school in the worst way.
Ivy League schools recruit many more players than scholarship programs. Most prospects get a full ride. Some, like the kid in the story, Denzel Washington’s kid, and Bill Bradley pay the full bill.
20 years ago, Princeton had a JV team to keep the players the varsity couldn’t use busy. These were guys who were recruited by other D1 schools. UNC-Chapel Hill has a JV team, but nearly all of those players are guys who were not offered D1 scholarships.
