Conference Realignment (Part 1)

Not allowed to talk to the media? Geez!

Jim Phillips might be the dopiest commissioner in ALL of college sports. Part of me wonders if the Big Ten gave him hush money prior to taking the job to sabotage the ACC.

clt says that lease in charlotte better be month to month at this point

Saw this In a reply to McMurphy… In case we forget just how much the move up to the AAC was really worth:

However, the identification Monday of those seven schools was yet another shot across the ACC’s bow. It’s possible — though not yet assured — if more than 50 percent of the conference’s membership leaves en masse, the grant of rights dissolves and financial penalties disappear.

This could get intresting, I would imagine the ACC would be intrested in the UConns and Temples of the world but I don’t anyone else in the confrence fitting their brand. Also what are the odds the PAC and the ACC just collapse completely?

Personally I think that Clemson and FSU wanna stay in the ACC as it provides an easier path to the CFP, and they like the bball league. I think what this is really about is trying to leverage an unequal payout scheme. Those schools want something like 2x what the other schools are getting. That means Duke, Wake, BC, etc will have to take significant cuts.

Take the ACC left overs and combine with the American and create a mega conference. Would be nice to create a couple more in state rivalries.

I know it will never happen as the ACC is to proud to just throw in the towel, however their bargaining and name sake power will be no longer if the names mentioned leaves for greener (pun intended) pastures.

Never gonna happen. That just prolongs the inevitable and lowers their total payout before the big teams bounce.

In the short term (say unequal payouts last 4 years) that just makes them worse and weakens their case as a possible candidate for another conference.

The play here is the big boys announce a new conference minus the football bottom feeders and they get a new TV deal on par with the competition.

Or they disperse to the bigger 3 and the TV contracts increase pro rata (hope that’s the right word).

I think the fact they don’t already have an eighth lined up is a sign they don’t exactly know what their doing. Did they go into this with their noses in the air again and want to exclude some of the others due to academics? If it’s academics just bring Georgia Tech along and your done.

Could the big 12 swerve and try to add Duke for the basketball and name?

Would Duke go for that?

They aren’t exactly an “institutional fit”.

Louisville to the Big XII makes a lot of sense, that being said I don’t know how much credbility to give this reporter.

Just go ahead and F this all up so I can give up and move on to other things.

I use to get real deep in the weeds on all the conference realignment buzz but I’m at the point I just want to live in the moment and hope we win some football games this fall.

personally I think vtech’s value is way overrated in the future landscape of college sports.
