Conference Realignment (Part 1)

More activity please! I enjoy reading this thread 4 or 5 times a day. It get’s me excited and hopeful for our program. I need my daily fix.

This thread has more pages than the Name Confusion Log.

Thats because conference realignment is even more confusing than our name and that is saying something.

Which is more important? Our name or our conference affiliation? Our conference affiliation is. Perhaps that is the reason.

July 1 mentioned again.

Its quite possible having a branch campus name has hurt our conference affiliation aspirations.

Surely not. Having UNC in front of any name can only help that institution, athletically or academically. :blank:

For me the biggest thing is we KNOW that we are going to be changing or joining a conference. We do not KNOW that the name will ever change.

Absolutely, Charlotte’s days in the A10 are clearly numbered.

How long was the A10 invitation on the table before we accepted? The Sun Belt invite has been out for nearly two weeks, if we were going that direction would we have already accepted?

I’m confident The Alliance is our destiny, the AD must be as well not to have accepted SBC invite yet.

This article has been updated since yesterday. There is nothing definite about UTSA really. Just some quotes from Karl Benson, Commissioner of the Sun Belt who will not reveal which schools he is talking to for the Sun Belt. He says UTSA is in the picture with the Alliance and sings their praises. According to this article, some time ago an Athletic Director from a school in the Mountain West said UTSA was too young to make the jump to the Alliance (which makes no sense since UTSA was going to the WAC anyway). However, they are now in the thick of things.

Now what does this have to do with Charlotte. I think plenty. Charlotte’s mentor has been UTSA since we approved our football program ( and probably before). We have built a close and positive relationship with them. Couple this with the relationship with our former conference mates from CUSA and I believe that we have been advocates for each other in the talks behind the Alliance for some time now (more so than any other two schools that are candidates that I can think of).

If we end up in the Sun Belt can we just discontinue basketball, because if we think it is rough now…watch out.

Aren’t many of the teams in the Sun Belt losing money? Seems it would be worth waiting for the alliance or something else, and simply offer football or nothing else to the Sun Belt.

FAU not going to merger, staying in Sun Belt

Well if the article is to be believed thats good for us.

“I can tell you we have not been invited to another conference,” Saunders said. “I think those decisions have already been made. I think it’s finished now. …We’re staying in the Sun Belt.”

If we had been told no I would think we would accepting that sunbelt invite.

The shitty thing is if we’d just have WON playing in the A-10 we would of had plenty of TV games and easy entry into the NCAA’s. Hard to say with the teams in the alliance that will be the case. But, it seems nobody cares about the A10 teams down here win or lose.

We’d dominate the conference, easy access to the NCAA’s. ::slight_smile:

If you throw in ODU and lets say Charlotte gets things rolling again, the Alliance has a better chance of getting more teams into the NCAA than the A10, especially with Temple leaving the A10.

ODU
Charlotte
UAB
UTEP
UNM
UNLV
Utah State

Have all had several NCAA appearances in the last 15 years.

Marshall and USM seem to be athletic departments on the rise.

I think the Alliance will turn out to be a nice conference.

FAU not invited. That could be good for us, or bad for us, depending on the reason why FAU was not invited.

If the new alliance is still planning on expanding to 20-24 teams, it is good for us.
