Hindsight is 20/20, so of course its easy to laugh about those comments now. However, at the time most any observer would have thought we would be at or near the top (not necessarily “dominant”) of the A10 most seasons. We were on a great 10 year run and if we would have been able to maintain our CUSA talent level, those expectations would certainly have been accurate.
until we become a competetive basketball program I see no reason to stay in the Atlantic 10. Atleast in the Sunbelt conference we might have a chance of having a winning record. And yes the A-10 is a multi bid conference but considering we are never one of the “bids” whats the point?
The point revolves around the money brought in through the A10 by having multiple bids.

Membership in a multibid conference like the A10 also gives us some bragging rights. You don’t see the worst teams in the ACC or SEC or Big East trying to drop down to CUSA do you?

Uh oh!!! Seems to be a wrench in the cogs of the CUSA/Mountain West merger. May just remain truly an alliance (and not a merger) after all. Does this present opportunities for Charlotte or not?
I want to believe that it means more teams will come in because CUSA may want to add between 4-6 on their own and MWC could want to add a couple. That would mean that 6-8 team could be taken instead of 4-6. Just my thinking.
On the other hand, I could see us getting left out and everybody biding their time for a year or two and waiting for something to break. This would leave Charlotte without a football home and may require us to go a route which isn’t as attractive. If so, it could take polish off of our “potential” pitch if we don’t live up to it.

Two weeks ago CBSSports.com reported that as many as 11 schools have been in contact with either C-USA or the Mountain West about their interest in the new league. Those schools, sources said, were: Idaho, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, San Jose State, Texas State, Texas-San Antonio and Utah State from the WAC; Florida Atlantic, Florida International and North Texas from the Sun Belt; and Charlotte from the Atlantic 10. On Friday, FAU President Mary Jane Saunders told FAUOwlAccess.com that the Owls have failed to receive an invitation to join the new league and will remain in the Sun Belt. "I can tell you we have not been invited to another conference," Saunders told FAUOwlAccess.com. "I think those decisions have already been made. I think it's finished now. ...We're staying in the Sun Belt." However, sources told CBSSports.com that no invitations to the new league had even been extended because the league's presidents aren't sure if they're merging or remaining separate.
Latest from McMurphy…
CBSSports.com: New C-USA, MWC league will be completed by early June
Clt says it is clear that a few ecu fans are scared of us.

I think this works to Charlotte’s advantage if the two divisions (essentially the two conferences as they are now) are autonomous. We have probably been in discussions with CUSA for several years about this, whereas the MWC would have to be brought up to speed if they have the same authority concerning the east side.
If CUSA were smart, they would go back to the hybrid model. Keep the merger as a football only arrangement and bring in some quality bball programs. Bring on ODU, Charlotte, and VCU. They will help improve the basketball standing of the league (assuming we get better :-\ ) and can transition in for football at a later date if provisions are met.
Why would any FBS conference take us for football only?
If Butler, VCU and George Mason really do join the A-10 just in time to watch us scamper off to some shitty backwater conference like the Sun-Belt…I am going to lose it!! >:(
Chris we are not going to Sunbelt… over my dead body… if we go to sunbelt im out
The sunbelt is garbage. Its either The Alliance or nothing. We’re too classy for the belt.
OK what if the Marshall and ECU walk away from the alliance and go to the SunBelt? And they add ODU and a few other schools? Would that change your perception?
In my personal opinion growing up in the eastern part of the state, ECU would be better off, and would rather be independent than play football in the sunbelt. While the non-revenue sports would be a good fit, ECU football is leaps and bounds ahead of the sunbelt.
