Got some run in this week’s ESPN mag. He’s in a sidebar of high major prospect players from the Prince George area. I guess its not in the online edition.
Here’s what the sidebar says about him:
He averaged 17 points and 7 assists as a freshman in Prince George’s ultracompetitive 4A public school league. The diminutive point guard has the legs to weave through a full court press in seconds and the eyes to pinpoint alley oops to a teammate before the defense has crossed halfcourt. Coaches love his unselfishness. Defenders loathe his quickness.
June, 2008: Traynham is a creative little point guard who thrives in the open floor. He changes the game with his ability to defend the ball from end to end and act as virtually a one man fast break on the offensive end. He is a special passer in the open court as he sees the floor beautifully, is one of the best there is at throwing the alley-oop, and can thread the needle even when in first gear. He also makes plays off the dribble when going north to south as he changes speeds well with his hesitation move and can also stop on a dime and pull-up smoothly in the mid-range area. Traynham needs to prove that he can be effective in a half-court game as he needs to become more consistent with his perimeter jumper while also finding ways to finish at the rim.
Daryl Traynham, Vance basketball: Had 29 points, 10 assists and three steals in 82-74 win against Middletown (Ohio) in the championship of the Junior Orange Bowl tournament in Miami last month. Traynham, a junior, and sophomores Jacoby Davis and Marquis Rankin made the all-tournament team. Vance is 12-0.
went to the vance game against north meck the other night, and saw this kid play…looks exactly like dijuan and is a very creative point guard who is lights out behind the arc. Lutz and all of his staff were present at this game… very explosive and quick

There’s an Observer article about that game. Said Traynham controlled the final 5 minutes of the game protecting the lead and they won by about 12. He scored 21 or 22. There’s no doubt he’s at the top of our list for 2010 PG.
One of my buddies teaches/coaches at Vance. He’s seen Bobby over there a couple of times recently. I guess Lutz can’t discuss who he’s there to see, but we were both sure it was Traynham.
Gotta say that I like the idea. Yet another 4 year guy for this class can’t hurt.
The Cougars, ranked No.1 in the Sweet 16, play with a familiar pattern: They want to start fast, build a lead and then play keep-a-way. It’s smart, because in 5-foot-6 junior point guard Daryl Traynham, Vance has one of the best ball-handlers I’ve covered in 20 years. Give him a fourth-quarter lead and it’s a high-school version of Phil Ford running Dean Smith’s Four Corners.
So did the kid have a bad bak in that last playoff game or not?? Coach would not confirm. A shame either way he did not play. Always seems to be a lot of drama surrounding this kid.
From a 2/26/09 posting on the NBE Basketball Report website:
One of our favorite players on the AAU scene in the class of 2010 has always been Daryl Traynham, a 5′9 point guard attending Vance High School in North Carolina. The DC-native is a fixture with the DC Assault program every spring and summer on the AAU scene.
Traynham is having another excellent season for Vance and at last check was averaging nearly 17 points and over 8 assists a game. While recruiting will wait until the summer, Traynham told NBE that Charlotte, UMass, Miami, Xavier, Texas A&M, South Florida, Fordham, Maryland and Auburn were the schools on his mind.
“I don’t have a timeframe on my decision,” Traynham informed NBE. “After the summer I will narrow it down.”
Local is always best. Stronger home pipeline means the local coaches are more likely to pitch us to their players and increases our chance of landing prospects here.
