This pretty much sums up Memphis recruiting:
If the allegations are proven to be true, Memphis could face penalties including forfeiture of games from last season, in which the Tigers went 33-4 and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.
Thatâs what happened to Tigersâ coach John Calipariâs 1996 Massachusetts team, which was forced to vacate its Final Four appearance after star Marcus Camby admitted taking money from an agent while at school.
La Mondue was seeking repayment of the money he allegedly gave Williams, who was the 17th overall pick in this yearâs NBA Draft. Williams plays for the Indiana Pacers.
âThis was the first time that we had heard of these allegations,â UofM athletic director R.C. Johnson said in a prepared statement. âThe University is investigating the situation, and will take all necessary action if these allegations are substantiated. We have also been in contact with the NCAA, and are working cooperatively with that organization to investigate these allegations. Right now, however, the University must emphasize that these are only allegations.â
Williams did not return a message left on his cell phone seeking comment.
La Mondue did not return phone messages left at his office. An administrative assistant at his law firm said he was in court Thursday and would not be available for comment.
Williamsâ agent, Happy Walters, said he had never heard of La Mondue and wasnât aware of any relationship between him and Williams.
âFrom what I understand, there wasnât a lot of merit to (the lawsuit), and itâs a guy who was a little bit bitter and slinging stuff out there,â Walters said. âI have not seen it, so I canât give you real details.â
Memphis coach John Calipari speaking after the teamâs victory over Jackson State on Thursday said he had never heard of La Mondue.
âFirst of all, the thing as was dismissed so I donât know exactly where it is,â Calipari said. âThe second thing, Iâd be surprised if there was anything to this. but it will be looked in to. I mean, this isnât just going to be passed by ⌠by it being dismissed I think it says a whole lot.â
The lawsuit included a signed affidavit and an itemized list of alleged payments to Williams, dating from March 25, 2004. Roughly one month earlier, Williams transferred from Hamilton High School to Laurinburg Prep in Laurinburg, N.C.
The list of payments includes 57 Western Union transfers totaling $25,665.45, a cash payment of $5,000, and seven payments totaling $9,114.40 sent by express mail.
Also included on the list was $1,900.84 in airfare, $3,607 over three years in cell phone payments, a $2,349.24 payment to a Chicago hotel.
