Dennis Dodd: NCAA expected to deregulate Football conference championship games

TL;DR - ACC and Big 12 are gonna get their way. No need for minimum 12 teams in league, or balanced divisions, etc. Each league gets to make its own rules for a CCG. This should result in low interest or motivation in/for conference expansion.

TL;DR - Extreme ADD version: Realignment probably done for foreseeable future.

Among the big boys, yes… but the removal of a 12-team minimum could spur some changes in the G5.

Would C-USA be the 13.5 team geographical oddity that it is today if an eight- or ten- team conference could hold a championship game?

Are you suggesting that existing G5 conferences will intentionally shed members? I cannot see that happening. Too difficult to force a program out.

If you meant the destabilization of the G5 into smaller regional leagues of departing programs own volition? Possible, but each and every team that leaves would also be leaving the CFP Access slot and established revenue streams. I cannot see that happening unless the departures engage in substantial backroom negotiations with both the CFP alliance and TV networks beforehand. They could face blocking votes from current conference members (or even potentially other G5 members), and I cannot see the TV networks making a large $$ play for an 8 team regional or subregional league, or something like it.

The small regional leagues would be better for the sport and operating costs, but the revenue hit and marginalization of those leagues in the big picture would be too detrimental at this point for that path to be viable.

So once again the P5 basically get to do what they want. More of the same.

Would have been nice if this decision had been made a long time ago. Maybe the big east is still in place.
