Lol there are what, 10,000 college football players on scholarship in FBS?

Everyone isn’t getting tens of thousands to be in a video game.

I think EA could do a little more.

There are 133 or 134 FBS teams and around 120 FCS teams. (these two comprise D1 football)

Even if you cut in all the FCS guys, it’s not that much money:

134x85=11,390

120x53=6,360

Total = 17,750 x $500 = $8,875,000

Or just FBS = $5,695,000

So between those two numbers.

Back in 2014, EA moved around 2 million units of the game, generating just under $90 million.

With such a long layoff and with increased pricing, I think it’s fair to guess that they will generate around 3 million units x $65 price = $195,000,000 or more than twice what they generated around 10 years prior.

Double payouts to about $1k per player, and I think you have hit a very fair #, without crushing the profit margin for an already greedy EA games shop. Plus most of EAs costs this time around will be sunk costs of developing a modern engine for the game. That engine will payoff for years in the future as they rarely do a full update and usually only tweak a few features etc each year. Most of the game is basically just a roster reset and if that’s what people pay for then by all means, give a bunch of that money to the players.

Heck, to be honest, EA could probably do some kind of deal with MS and Sony to pay the players in free consoles / games plus a cash stipend (as an option). Most of these guys would gladly take it since they all seem to play anyway. It would be a little cheaper for EA than a full cash payout and the two console companies should be good with getting more consoles out there and a potential write off as an advertising expense.

What I don’t want happening is this holdout being used as an excuse to delay the game any longer.

Isn’t participation in this voluntary? If enough players that EA wants in their games don’t take the $500, then EA will likely increase their offers to these players. If enough players do take the $500, then EA set the price correctly.

Don’t the schools/conferences have to opt in as well? The pie gets a lot smaller when you take that into account.

This. Honestly, I’ll buy it for the school more than a player name. If I go dynasty, the players will eventually be randos anyway.

The greed will ruin this like almost everything else. If the top 40-50 teams split off maybe that’s the best for everything. I can stop caring about college sports completely.

I can’t wait to play this, which is scary, considering EA is involved.
