Fan Day

Towards the end Major ran an interesting scrimmage. He had:
Thorne C
Braz PF
E-Vic SF
Williams SG (remember Mayfield is injured)
Henry PG

I think this will be our starting five, or at least the starting five we will try.
I know this is only a snippet from your entire review. But sometimes you guys make it sound like we previously only had midgets. Or…that the current roster is more similar in size to a Syracuse.

I still see a 6’8" Braswell starting at C. See Kelvin Price or Martin Iti. A 6’7" Clayton at PF. See Withers or Cam Stephens. A 6’5" Mayfield at PF. See Lamont Mack or Eddie Basden. A 6’4" TW at SG. See Jobey Thomas or Deangelo Alexander. Perhaps the only significant size difference is at the PG, with 6’3" Henry.
We’ve had some very big lineups but unfortunately some of them were stiffs. Helliwell, Neely and Whitehead Jr. were all > 6’10 and on the same roster but they were soft as dough. I remember Kenyon Martin absolutely abusing them. Replace them a season later with an experienced KenKay and throw in Cam Stephens and suddenly smaller was better. Comes down not only to size, but athleticism and attitude.

Don’t forget Tory Reed!

Courtney “Sleeves” Williams

Reminds me of MT. He said he wants to be dominant. I’m thinking of that article from the Fayetteville Observer they ran just after we signed him.

"In a dream world, Thorne wants to grow into a Dwight Howard clone, a player that flushes everything around the basket with authority and rebounds with tenacity. In a dream world, of course.
After improving so much so fast since sitting on the bench at another school, he knows the best is yet to come.
“I think I can get way better,” he said. "I haven’t reached half of my potential."

Ha ha. The good ol’ days.

Let’s not forget Chris Nance.

Going to second most of whats been said here about the scrimmage. The chemistry with the new guys seems very good.Perria seems ready to take on a leadership role and is a great defender.Clayton and Clark will give us toughness around the hoop and take some pressure off of Braswell,as well as Thorne…but we will have a very hard time scoring against the better teams that pack it in inside and dare us to shoot from outside.

If neither TWILL or EVIC can improve their midrange game and if noone develops into a good 3 pt. shooter I see us being a good but clearly not very good-excellent team.Losing Lester looks like it’s really going to hurt.

We must press more than last year to try to get some easy baskets. Also,I wouldn’t be surprised either if Colby is used some as a zonebreaker…especially if noone else can do that.

I am very curious to see Lester. He shot a crappy % in HS but was that because he was the teams only option? Is he a better spot up shooter vs creating his own? How does he move without the ball vs. being the primary handle? These things can have a major impact on shooting.

Just saying that the 25% might not be a fair representation of his actual ability to be the shooter we need on the team. Or maybe it is totally fair, only time will tell.

he was the only option on his high school team. he hit like 7 threes in a row in a aau game and like 6 or 7 in the nc. vs. sc all star game. when i saw him play he seemed like he could get hot at any time and shoot from deep but i do not think he is a pure shooter but definitely a better shooter than anybody except for colby on the team. he also can handle the ball, create for himself, is very fast end to end with the basketball, is a good rebounder and good defensively. his biggest weakness seems to be consistency but that i can live with.
