• Pool A of the Group of Five distribution includes $60 million ($12 million multiplied by five conferences.) • Pool B will be divided based on a ranking system of the five conferences. CBSSports.com reported in January that the number to be split would be $20 million. The highest ranked conference will get $7 million. The lowest ranked conference would get an extra $1.5 million. That $20 million figure likely will grow, according to a source, because the $86.5 million is a four-year rolling average. Revenue is expected to escalate in the future. • That would leave approximately $6 million left over for Pool C. Whatever that number ends up being, it will stay fixed over the four-year period and accounts for the amount earned by the Group of Five participant in a playoff bowl. The highest ranked team from those 63 schools is guaranteed a spot in one of the six playoff bowls. "What you end up [with] is a single bucket of money that you end up dividing to three different pools," a source said. If a Group of Five school finishes in the top four, it will participate in the four-team national playoff. Teams get a reported $6 million for participating in a national semifinal, nothing for playing in the championship game. A Group of Five conference that finishes ranked No. 1 among the five and becomes the playoff bowl participant -- but not in the top four -- could earn the $25 million to $26 million this way: • $12 million in base pay • $7 million for finishing No. 1 in conference rankings • Approximately $6 million for playing in playoff bowl The Mountain West will split that playoff bowl money 50-50 between the conference champ and other conference members if an MWC school qualifies, CBSSports.com reported in January. The new playoff is reportedly worth an average of $500 million per year

Bottom line is that they’ve removed the incentive to go past 12 teams for the Go5 conferences so that they’ll quite raiding each other, and then FCS, for new members. CUSA members, with 14 members, will already get less from Pool A ($857,142.85 vs $1M for a 12 team or less Go5 conference). We now have to make that up by 1, making sure the conference finishes near the top to make up for the shortfall in Pool A. 2, hope our TV contract stays the same or “miracle” increases in value. 3, Win our conference AND be the top non-BCS conference.

“Go balls deep.”

What pool are we win?
What pool are we win?
Schools aren’t in pools, quantities of money are.

One pool of money is set and schools will receive the same amount of money from it each year (with the possibility of it increasing in the future).

One pool of money is distributed based on performance of the conferences. The best Go5 conference in a given season gets the most money while the weakest gets the least.

In the grand scheme of things this is like the homeless fighting over who gets to smoke the last bit of the cigarette butt. This is pocket change relative to other realignment issues.

Or just have each conf. get an equal share. Why should Gang of 5 get more?

Yup -

If school A brings me more money in TV deal then still worth doing. If school A weakens lower conference to make it more difficult for them to get a bigger share then also still worth doing. In other words doesn’t change much. Just means conferences really need to do due diligence before they make a move, which is probably a good thing.

Ah. Good explanation.
