GSU Postgame

Let’s start it off shall I?

Called in sick from work to watch the game and happy that I did. Partly because it was on National TV (even though I was watching an internet feed) and not on our crappy sideline camera that we were forced to watch in the CSU game. As far as the game goes, went exactly like most of us thought it would. Still a solid win considering out best perimeter player was out. We may be ugly on offense (even though we shot close to 50%), but I love how this team defends. So refreshing to see after all those year’s under Lutz when we played no defense, or very little of.

Some player notes:

Henry - Love this guy. He does not care about scoring at all and that’s what I love about him. He is a true point guard and team player. Major would keep him out there for 40 minutes if he could.

EVic - Poor first half but very good second half. Had some really nice drives and thought he was going to throw down a monster jam on that break.

TWill - Has a solid mid-range game, but he should not be shooting any three’s at all. Hopefully he can extend his range in the coming years.

Clayton and Clarke - Feel like I know what I’m getting from these two every night. Clark was quiet because of foul trouble, but Clayton had a really nice game and just short of a double double.

Thorne - Liked the way he moved. Still raw as hell, but that hook shot was nice in the first half and that block was really impressive in the second half.

Braz - Typical game for Braz. Should average close to 20 & 10 this season I think

Ingram - Worst player on the court by far. Only his second game, but threw the ball away three of four times. Just a bad game

We dominated in a very ugly game. I was very impressed with how disciplined we are. Big props to the coaching staff and big props for the players for carrying it out. There were very few poor shots, completely different from years past. We do not have a single real shooting threat on the team, but Major knows this, and we play accordingly. I like that, but it still really sucks. For that reason, I don’t think we will be able to hang with FSU or any of the top A 10 teams this year.

This is probably going to be a very consistent team, what you see is what you get: Good effort, good discipline, physical play, rebounding, an almost non existent perimeter game, good defense, poor ball control.

Our assist to turnover ratio was horrible,as it has been ever since Dijuan left. I love Henry, but how good of a team can you be when your pg only averages 3 assists per game? I’m not saying it’s Henry’s fault, maybe it’s almost entirely due to our lack of shooters. I think this will be a good team, but we are weak in areas it takes to pull off big upsets and make deep tournament runs - outside shooting and assists vs turnovers.

Well said. I really like how our team defends too, and I am excited to see what the team will look like when we add Mayfield back into the mix.

can anyone post a torrent of the game? I missed it, DVR failed me.

I think that will rise slowly as the games progress and we get Mayfield back. I just don’t think we would be all that much better if Henry averaged six assists as opposed to say three of four a game. The other things he brings to the table such as overall defense, steals, hustle, rebounding and leadership far out way the non-high assist numbers.

I was impressed that Henry, after missing his first attempt, made 9 fts in a row, and the team as a whole made 74%. Hopefully, we can keep this up and not leave points on the line.

Disappointed, but not surprised at Ingram’s struggles. I still think he has the tools to be a solid scoring PG but has a learning curve for taking care of the ball and running the offense. We’ll need his scoring punch at some point so I hope he stays focused and positive.

This team wins ugly, but it WINS. 2 and 0!!! ;D

There were a couple of moments last night when our players had an open look in the 17-22 ft range and acted genuinely hesitant to shoot the ball. In each of those situations, we ended up driving to the basket and either getting a layup or drawing a foul. It was absolutely beautiful to watch. In the past, we would have jacked those shots up EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

We had only attempted 4 treys at the half. Major is tailoring our offensive scheme to the players he has. I think he’s starting to show a little bit of growth as a coach. Our players certainly look to be buying in to his philosophy.

Encouraging signs for things to come. It was an ugly game, but they are all going to be ugly from here on out. We are going to be in a lot of games because of the way we defend. One concern for us going forward is that we must figure out a way to break the 2-3 and box and one. We are never going to be able to shoot teams out of zones, so we need to figure out a way to beat them with physicality and hard cuts to the basket. We’ve had a definite size advantage in these first two games. I hope we can continue to play with this kind of oomph when we play teams that match up with us a little better.

2-0. Keep it rollin.

Pretty much DOBA. I would add that I hope our fan base is going to be ok with “Big Ten-Style” basketball 'cause that’s what we have.

We flat-ass get after it on D and won an ugly game, hope to do that a lot his year.

Clayton and Clarke are gonna be solid I think- they are D1 ready and not afraid to mix it up, they are probably more D1 ready than Thorne still. He needs some work but is big and hopefully will improve.

Don’t have much hope of getting much out of Thompson except maybe in spurts.

Henry is a man. TWill will be ok but he’s not gonna be a 15 pt man many nights, hopefully he steps up when he needs to. Hopefully he continues to hit the intermediate J. Nickerson has improved and good going to the basket but can’t shoot.

Bras did what he needed to- pretty well dominated smaller/less talented players. Like that, but hopefully that holds up against big, solid D1 guys too.

Hard to tell much about the team without Mayfield, he should be our 2nd option on O so I’m still curious to see how it looks with him on the court.

Ingram simply isn’t ready. Doubt he plays much against quality competition when Mayfield returns.

We’re going to lose some games this year due to our lack of a quality threat from outside, I think we’re going to wish Luka was here at times, but I love the way we play D.

I agree with your post. I do think that being a freshman, Ingram handled himself pretty well. He has already showed that he can handle the ball at the point, at least for the most part. I thought he played pretty solid defensively. That foul he got where he blocked the shot was great considering his position and size. I think our ppg average is going to always be around 66 to 70 with this team. The difference is that our opponents are only averaging 55.5. That will change over time, but if we can keep teams out of the 70’s we have a good shot at winning. I thought the offense played even throughout the game except when we throttled back toward the end. The defense would break down and lose some scores in the first half, but the 2nd half defense was great holding them to 27.7% shooting and at 10% until midway the 2nd half. Tough to win with only 19 points in a half.

Basden nailed it 2k… That was the game…

I was most impressed with EVic’s second half… In the 1st he looked timid (per ususal), the second half he was attacking the hoop and looked confident for the 1st time here… Hopefully this keeps up.

I fear that our lack of a shooter will kill us when we start playing good teams- we shoud have waxed these guys but let them hang around way too long.

Norm appeared to have grown at least a couple of inches taller since last game.
Thompson’s knee is still bothering him.
It was an ugly game both times I watched it - once live and once at home.

E Vic is a guy who looks the part to be a really special player, but has yet to really translate that on the floor. The second half yesterday was the first time I saw a flash of what I had hoped to see from him.

I hope Mayfield has turned into Leemire jr from deep because we need shooters in the worst way.

i think what was missing was confidence. He found that at some point in the 2nd half and rolled with it.
How that translates to the next game is unknown, but it’s a starting point.

I hate to be a downer, but this is two games in a row where we throttled back to eat clock and blew leads. With the offense we are running it is taking us 20-25 seconds to take a shot (outside of fast breaks). This being the case, why have the team pull the ball out and eat clock starting with 6 minutes to go At best, doing this is only saving 15 seconds a possession and it completely killed our momentum and scoring. I am pleased that Coach has the team he wants and is playing into their strengths as far as the offensive set goes, but we have historically not been a good Free Throw shooting team and stopping our movement stops all our production. I see this as a repeat mistake (2 for 2 this year) not to mention the times it has occurred in the past 2 years.

EVic’s best play IMO wasn’t the steal and coast to coast, it was a play where he missed a layup- he got the ball on the wing and absulutely blew by his guy and attacked the rim, he had a little too much on it and Clayton (I think) missed the put back… But the confidence on the drive is what has been lacking.

We have to get more butts in seats.

The optimist in me says Major is using these big leads as learning opportunities for end-of-game situations where we want the last shot. We had a comfortable enough lead that we could risk slowing the game down.

That said, I really wish we’d keep the gas pedal down until the clock hits zero and stomp all over one of these bad teams.
