There is a limit to how many times the fight song should be played and talking about the Alma Mater is nonsense?
I think I need to drop my financial support of this school. The critics of the athletic programs at UNC Charlotte may have a point, if this is how school representatives think.

I think youâre taking the wrong meaning there. Not saying there is a limit, but we do play the fight song a lot and people are always saying, âMore!â Itâs hard to fit it in more as we donât have many more opportunities to play (other activities happenning during time outs, etc.). And he wasnât saying playing the Alma Mater was nonsense, but that arguing in such a way about it is.
Man, calm down. Iâm not saying we should impose limits on how many times we play it, just that if it was all we played like some people seem to want people would get tired of it. And no, talking about the Alma Mater is not nonsense, but getting up in arms about it is. I was just trying to make the point that for whatever reason the alumni and the athletic department havenât brought it up before, but if and when they did itâs very likely we would play it. Besides, itâs not like thereâs a game tomorrow, so thereâs plenty of time to discuss this. Itâs been brought up, Iâm sure weâll talk about it in the band. And Iâm very sorry if your dislike for the band of all things is going to convince you to drop your support of athletics. The poor innocent volleyball teamâŚ

Someone who would post this has obviously never been in a band.
trombone, I know that has nothing to do with the topic but yes, I do know something about music. I spent 7 years in band In High Point, playing 3 different instruments my senior year. I could go on and say my late uncle was a high school band director before being promted to principal and later an assistant school superidendent in Columbia. He was talented enough to be a member of the Furman band in the 8th grade and well as performing in the local high school band. My cousin has just retired from playing ithe flute in the US Army band after 25 years. The grandparents insisted on musical instruments for all the kids and we gladly complied.
Everyone wants the topic to die, Iâve said/done my part and I believe everyone will be satisfied come b-ball season.
Response from Mr. Dover. Looks like the Alma Mater problem is solved.
Here's an idea, let's play the alma mater! I just read the 3 pages of
debate over the playing of the alma mater. I was surprised to see such
a desire to hear it. I don't think I would like me very much if I only
knew what I read. I was approached sometime back about playing the alma
mater, and bounced the idea off of a few others. They were not very
excited about it, so I dropped it. That's what I have always done with
this group. Their opinion does count. I know I came off a little harsh
with my comments on the email. I'm not apoligizing because it did seem
to pop out of the blue. It hit me the wrong way. Much of what has been
said I find to be silly. You don't need to march through the streets of
Charlotte to get the song played. We'll play it. I suppose I could make
a defense for all that was said, but it wouldn't accomplish anything.
Directing this band is a part time gig for me. I have no fear of being
fired. I do it because I happen to work with the greatest group of people
UNCC has to offer. We should be able to put this all to rest and
wait to hear the alma mater sometime this season. No hard feelings. In
the future, just ask me. I do have a sense of humor. That's why we'll
continue to play "Al". I'll know that someone out there is going
insane. Post this if you'd like.
Go Niners!
Cory Dover
As for âCall Me Alâ⌠I kinda like it! :silly:
Cory Dover is the single greatest band directorâneigh, the single greatest human being, ever to grace the floors of Halton Arena.
OK, maybe thatâs a little strong, but heâs an awesome dude. The music department wanted me to cut my hair or tie it in a ponytail during games because they didnât feel it was professional. Cory Dover stuck up for me and told the music department that he didnât think that was right, so I got to be who I was and didnât have to alter my look to be in the band.
(wipes tear from eye)
Cory Dover, I love you. Iâll come back and play Al over and over again if you want me to. I got your back.
Call Me Al is the gayest song I have ever heard. (not that there is anything wrong with that)
The video is even worseâŚstrange how two talented guys completely lost their sense of humor, then ended up in a video together. At least Paul Simon doesnât have to depend on a sense of humor to earn a living. Tough break Chevy.
This just may be the most embarrassing, pointless, insignificant and ridiculous thread ever to appear on this board.
Have our fellow 49er fans really argued for 4 pages about âAlâ and our alma mater?
Oh
My
God!
No matter what our Pep band plays at gamesâŚis it really that big of a deal? Personally, I am more concerned about hairs on my ass than I am about the music selection of our Pep Band.
KTOWN, my man⌠you may have very well just said the most beautiful words that I have heard in recent memoryâŚif nothing else, you just graced this thread with some of the most insightful and concise speech yetâŚand I applaud you, for saying what I have been thinking for about ⌠oh, a page and a half nowâŚ
While we are making requests, can I request that the band actually give a flying flip about the game? And if you donât care, at least act like it? I donât care what you play, but get into the game when youâre not playing - or else give up the good seats to someone that does care. Thatâs been my main gripe about the band for a couple of years now.

Well, if you had paid attention last year, you would know that the band was leading 90% of all cheers on our end of the arena. Plus organizing distractions for opposing free throw shooters. We were constantly applauded by DeVos, Rose, and members of both teams for our spirit last season. If you don't like us, fine, but we do perform at every mens and womens game and we earn those seats.

Well actually I was paying attention and what I see is small group of students spread out across too many rows of seats doing their homework, chatting, etc. Organizing distractions? Please, a COUPLE of the band members actually get to their feet at a time other than when they are about to perform and wave their instruments. How is this a distraction? Oh fine, you go to mens and womens games, you earn those seats. Well I go to every menâs game (I donât go to others because we live about an hour away) - what does that earn me? Nothing - I still have to pay to sit in the upper area, Alumni seats. If I want to EARN better seats I have to shell out thousands of dollars. All I want is a little school pride and a little more enthusiasm.
