Whoopty do. It seems like anyone can have their lifetime series tied with Louisville⦠like say, oh, us.
-_-
But hey, be proud.
It should be quite the send off to the ranks of the mid-majors.

I was referring to our record AT FREEDOM HALL over the last 18 games we have played there. I do not think there is another school in the country that can claim that record, my friend. :)
Originally posted by MeinShaft@Feb 22 2005, 03:16 PM Let's crash their ESPN Gameday party and make it a hollow, meaningless day for them. Whether we win the game or not, the ESPN GameDay will not be diminished one iota.
Itās Memphis vs Louisville. Doesnāt get much bigger than that.
We have a huge tailgate that will be in place and win or lose we are going to have a lot of fun!
I don't think we are overlooking them though... if anything, I think they might be overlooking us since they play Louisville next. There seems to be more Louisville talk on their board than Charlotte talk.
Thatās because we have a lot more to plan for Louisville than Charlotte. We have ESPN GameDay coming and MemphisTigers.org is doing a huge tailgate for it and have basically taken over the whole thing. Thatās why it is the dominant talk over there.
Honestly I can understand both of you twoās points.
Your team is moribund, recent āhotā streak or not (ours is still better). Your fans have no offseason at all to look forward to, and itās all downhill into the depths of mid-majordom afterwards.
I do hope you get that cherished victory against Louisville. Itāll be a terrific end to Memphisā run as a basketball program being worth a damn.

No offseason? lol
As far as mid-majordomā¦what the heck do you think the A-10 is?
Currently 2 teams are ranked BELOW 300. 2 more teams are ranked below 200. Only 3 teams are ranked in the top 100.
The A-10 will be no better than the new CUSA when it comes to basketball. You guys will probably dominate just like weāll probably be the best in the new CUSA.

Two teams in the Elite 8 last year, and back to back national player of the years.

Like Marquette to the final 4 it was an abberation (sp?) year.
How can back to back NPOY be confined to one year?
Originally posted by Powerbait@Feb 23 2005, 01:57 AM How can back to back NPOY be confined to one year? You show me one place that says POY from one conference and I can show another one.
Okafor Sports Illustrated Player of the Year for 2004
Just like last year Sean Banks was the National Freshman of the Year according to ESPN but I can show you another source that claims other players were the Freshman of the Year.
It is subjective, at best.
But Iām assuming when you say the POY was won 2 consecutive times by the A-10 you are referring to the Naismith or Wooden awards?
That shows only the 2004 award going to Jameer Nelson of St. Josephs. Prior to that it went to T.J. Ford of Texas.
Heckā¦even the Wooden Award only went to an A-10 Player in 2004 not 2 years in a row.
Iām lost on this 2 years in a row bit.
Last I remember, Texas was not in the A-10.
Point is you can be a mid-major and still win a national award. I donāt consider Charlotte a mid-major but you will be a major team in a mid-major conference, just like we will be.
Garnered two of the five major college basketball Player of the Year honors in 2003. Named AP National Player of the Year and was named National Player of the Year by the United States Basketball Writers Association. West finished as the runner-up to Texas guard T.J. Ford in the voting for the Wooden Award. He also received the Pete Newell Big Man award from the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

The Wooden & Naismith awards are like the Heisman of college basketball. Those are generally thought of to be the two ābiggiesā.
Again my point is you can be in a mid-major conference and win national awards.
Look at the 2004 Wooden All-America Team
2004: Blake Stepp - Gonzaga
2004: Jameer Nelson - St. Josephs
2003: David West - Xavier
2002: Dan Dickau - Gonzaga
2001: Casey Calvary - Gonzaga
1999: Wally Szczerbiak - Miami of Ohio
1996: Marcus Camby - UMass
1994: Jason Kidd - University of California @ Berkely
Just some examples. Outstanding Players are not 100% confined to the āBig 6ā conferences.
Okay, go show me two players from another purported āmid-majorā that in consecutive years won any combination of the awards Nelson, Okafor, West, and Ford got the last two years.

Doesn't matter. You don't have to be considered "Major" to win national awards.
Hey Gonzaga and Tulsa both made it to the Elite 8 in the past 5-6 years.
Gonzaga is a national player. Are you telling me the West Coast Conference is a āMajorā conference? Gonzaga has had 3 different players on the All-Wooden team 3 of the last 4 years. Does that make the WCC a āMajorā conference?
Iām done discussing this. Itās obvious we both have differing opinions and no combination of facts is going to change that.
Who gives a ratās ass? The A10 will be stronger than C-USA next year. And Charlotte is a major program. Thatās all I care about.

And I will agree with that. I never said that the new CUSA would be stronger but that it is ludicrous to think the A-10 isn't mid-major. It is not part of the major conferences.
I also agree that Charlotte is a āMajorā team, but playing in a mid-major conference just like Memphis will be.
Heck, Conference USA in itās current form isnāt considered by many to be a āMajorā despite the fact we got 6 teams in last year.

I would agree with that statement. There are plenty "casual" college basketball fans across the country that view our conference (as a whole) that way. They may see a handful of teams as being elite, but not the entire conference. That's a shame considering CUSA's success in fielding teams in March.
Iām sooo glad you tiggers are looking forward to playing loserville Saturday. You better hope your team comes in here knowing they have to play us first tonight. If not, the loss you suffer will be worse than if you actually acknowledge youāre playing a damn good team on their home floor. Sheeeesh!
