Hard no.
The majority of the fans of that brand donât care either way. And if weâre being honest, there are even those who wouldnât care if the school associated with the brand ceased to operate as an institution of higher education. Just as long as there was still football on Saturdays in the fall.
I am not convinced that is the case. Iâm sure some donât care, perhaps even many - but the majority? Iâm not so sure.
If college basically becomes just an inferior NFL/NBA with college branding I really donât think most fans are onboard with that.
Respectfully disagree. Are there some people out there who wonât care. A few sure but I would argue the vast majority would care.
There are a lot of hard core fans who only want (and have time) to watch the best players and they only watch the pros. I know several people who are like that. They know NOTHING about college players till they get drafted. This is especially prevalent with football fans.
Looking back at my own life I can distinctly remember being a kid and knowing zip about college sports but knowing something about the pros. I watched the NBA religiously years before I ever followed college basketball. I was semi aware of the ACC tournament but I followed the NBA (thanks to TBS showing the hawks along with the big network coverage). I remember understanding that these were the best players in the world. College was less than. I only got into college sports big time when I went to UNCC.
My wifeâs a casual and she doesnât even understand the current landscape. To her college players getting paid is âyuckâ. If they werenât students she would likely wonder why the heck I was watching it.
Without the student status college sports become minor league. A true minor league and we know how that goes.
Without the student status that give the teams a certain cachet, it will fall apart. I am sure of it.
I can see what you are saying Run. I think the difference is the Walmart fan versus the alumni. The Walmart fan doesnât care about the university just the teams. Most alums I speak to are disgusted by todays college sports world. Like many I am incredibly close to tapping out. Albin and my taigating friends bought the university another season of contributions from me. I really think Albin is the coach we have always needed. I also think UNC Charlotte has little to nothing to do with todayâs sports world. It all gives me pause when considering future contributions.
Kinda what I was thinking on the Walmart fans. They may have never stepped foot on campus so it really only exists in the abstract. The university is the football or basketball team to them, not a place of higher learning.
clt says most acc walmart fans donât even know where the schools are located.
