And I wasnt trying to sound like an arrogant know-it-all with that last post, it’s just a fact. Sprinting speed doesn’t necessarily equal lateral quickness, which is what he would need to guard quick 180-210lb sf’s. At 280, they would just take him out to the perimeter on offense and go right by him. So yeah unless he loses about 50 pounds, I can’t see him playing sf.
this guy sounds solid but more of a glue guy. we need glue guys but we also need the stars, especially in the 2011 class.
Come on. 280lbs SFs are a dime a dozen.
Ok, so if you just happen to go to the Basketball Recruiting DB and use the prospect search feature and enter 2011 & Charlotte, you get Dawson and all others we’re after. Pretty cool actually.

That list says we’re recruiting John Wall and Matthew Stafford. Two #1 over all picks. Nice!

lol yeah for real. Oh and not only is he a few burgers shy of 300 pounds, he shoots in the neighborhood of 45% from the ft line, so I’m guessing his midrange jumper leaves a lot to be desired. Like I said, he could be a matchup nightmare at the 4, but you’re either brand new to the game of basketball, or delusional, if you think Major will ever have him play the three spot.

You’re jumping the gun Scotty. He could lose weight and learn to shoot free throws. He may already have a jumper even though he cannot hit free throws. You’ve been around Niner basketball long enough to know that ANYTHING could happen. With all that said, I think you do have a valid point.
The guy was a standout QB and WR so you may be short changing his lateral quickness a bit and our starting SF shot a whopping 46% from the FT line last year. I guess that extra 1% means his mid range game is lethal.
I’m not saying the guy will be the starting SF but if you think he could play C if we were in a pickle I don’t see how you can say there is no way he could play SF at all. Considering we currently have nothing to speak of on the roster at SF for the year after next I don’t think anything is out of the realm of possibility. I think he could spell the starter for 5 mins or so a game if need be and maybe 10 mins at pf.
If we have a 6’6 280lb guy playing the three, we either have huge problems, or he’s the most freakish athletic specimen to ever don the Niner uni. I’m not trying to start an argument or debate, I just can’t see this behemoth playing the 3. I mean let’s be real, he outweighs Shamari by a first grader.
He benches 350 and runs a freakin 4.5 40. Yeah I’d say he’s in shape. Btw that article listed him at 6’6 280. If he’s as quick as they say, he could be a matchup nightmare, despite the lack in height.[/quote]
There’s no way a 6’6 280lb guy that benches 350 can run a 4.5 40. Absolutely no way.

Julius Peppers? I dont know, though, most of these things are exaggerations. Maybe we’ll see in person…
2011 is seemingly short on big men. We would have Bras and KJ for 2011, but thats really it. Need at least 2-3 big men in this class. Dawson is one we are targeting (he is visiting this weekend), Thorne another, and then…?
Dawson seems like a role player. His FT %age scares me, but he did well enough to earn all freshman in a good juco conference, playing at the same school Derrio did. I’m all up for commitments at this point since we have none.
clt is curious about his old spice swagger ranking.
Imagine if Ryan Kalil (who runs a quick 4.9 40 himself) of the Carolina Panthers mentioning to the Charlotte coaches his younger brother who recently started playing basketball. That would be intriguing in a year with few quality big men - if he is quick in development, Kalil Jr. might learn the basketball skills to contribute at a high level as an old-fashioned ‘wide-body’. I thought I was being complimentary by comparing him to a guy like AntwoN (a starter) and I’d happily offer a scholarship to such a player. Spears is an unfair comparison. And would I want Kalil Jr. guarding Dionte Christmas? No way.
yes there is. why do you have to think you’re such a fucking expert on everything? you have no clue about anything, do you?
We need another big/widebody. That’s all there is to it. We’re losing Phil and Spears… that leaves the cupboard far too bare.

It’s very possible, ever hear of Julius Peppers? Not sure why he’s not playing Football though.

Injuries made Dawson switch from Football to Basketball in HS.
If he can get his bench press down to 110 can he run a 4.5?

There are NFL LB’s that can run a 4.5 and if they can do 225 15-20x at the combine, I wouldn’t think it’d be that hard for them to max out at 350.

Peppers runs like a 4.68 or so…
To be honest, based on convos from a buddy who ran track, the measurements in 40 times for football players are about as accurate as the Australian rulers that measured Iti. Some are perfectly legit while others, shall we say, take some pretty generous liberties. It really all depends on who has the stopwatch. But that’s beside the point - this Dawson kid should possess some terrific athleticism but how well he translates from the football field to the basketball court remains to be seen. Derrio’s old coach seems to think favorably of his abilities which is a good sign. I hope we land him.
