CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte 49ers men’s soccer team after posting victories over Davidson (5-1) and College of Charleston (5-3) this past weekend have been voted into the national rankings at #24 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll. This marks the 49ers men’s soccer program’s first national ranking since being ranked #19 in the NSCAA poll, September 28, 1998. Charlotte is also ranked #1 in the latest NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Region poll.

The 49ers had a stretch from 1991-98 where they appeared in the national rankings each season and in six of those eight years, the 49ers earned a top 10 national ranking. The 49ers highest final national ranking have been #4 in 1994 and #5 in 1996.

Sophomore Andres Cuero leads the 49ers in scoring with three goals, two assists and eight points. While, senior Chris Salvaggione, who was a preseason All-Atlantic 10 selection, and junior Luke Exley are tied for second on the team with two goals apiece.

Charlotte does not return to regular season action until September 12 when they play Coastal Carolina in the first game of the UNC Wilmington Marriott Classic. This weekend, the 49ers will play their annual Alumni game at the 49ers Practice Field, Saturday, September 6 at 6 pm.

Niiiice.

The program has been out of the spotlight for too long. A ranked Niner soccer team restores balance to the universe.

bout damn time

we were spoiled back in the day

Didn’t think we looked overly impressive in the exhibition here against High Point, but those are some impressive victories. Hopefully we can keep it up and roll into A10 play.

I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since we were last ranked. We were in the top 10 consistantly while I was in school ('96-"99). Feels good to be back where we belong!

HELL YEAH!!!

:49ers::49ers::49ers:

yeah soccer, yeah.

This could be the start of something extremely special happening with our soccer program.
I look to see them on the level of our golf team in the coming years if we can keep our current coaching staff in place.

Welcome back, Men’s Soccer. We missed you.

Nothing in the Observer. Must be waiting to include it in the soccer section on Friday. Usually one article on a featured team and a Carolina’s soccer rankings.

Dropped out after only beating the Alumni 5-3 on Saturday. :shades: No games for us since the initial ranking.

2nd in the Middle Atlantic division. For some reason we’re not in the South with UNC-CH, Wake, App, USC.

Probably done by conference affiliation, rather than actual geography.

Beat UNCW 3-1 today and lost in OT Friday to Coastal Carolina. Now 3-1. Outshot Coastal 12-4. Tournament was in Wilmington and UNCW is coached by former 49er standout goalkeeper, Aidan Heaney.

Nothing in the Observer. Must be waiting for us to drop out of the rankings before a doing big soccer article on ranked teams in the state.
FIXED !!!

This is the first thing I’ve seen about this year’s soccer success. How do we spread the word to soccer fans living in Charlotte?

They have to read the messageboard.

Beat a pretty good Winthrop team 2-0 Friday night, now 4-1.

Sunday Sept 21 at 2:30 - The 49ers conclude play in the Charlotte/Nike Invitational when they face former Conference USA rival UAB at Transamerica Field

Beat UAB 1-0 to win the tournament and go to 5-1 on the season.

Does UNCG still have the good program they used to have? Did we ever get anything in the O about being nationally ranked? After all, a national ranking is a national raking.
